i agree, wouldn't the rational approach be to give the club's biggest legend a bit of slack considering he just won the league for the first time in a decade? especially considering his weight and influence with the current squad
if this is some american corporate stuff it's going to get extremely gay very quickly
No doubt, a better and more democratic approach would have been to slightly adjust roles and have someone with more experience deal with certain negotiations and closing deals while maldini can deal with other responsibilities and grow along the way.

That's if they didn't like the way he was handling business, if this is a case of maldini asking for more support and them intending to turn this into a money ball feeder club, they can fuck themselves.

There wasn't any glee in Brutus either.

Me on the other hand after months of pointing out Maldini doing a bad job.

Maldini made it clear in the past he won’t go for that and he’s shown this season he has no problem going outside of the channel and speaking his mind.

The only positive is that at least this didn’t drag on and maybe the replacement can get to work quickly.

I’ve been trying to get my thoughts together on this decision while avoiding emotional or reactionary posting.

BUT

I’m not sure I see the logic in it and my initial reaction is that it is very short-sighted.

We did not win trophies this year, but the season was still a success by every other measure, especially the measures an American PE company would normally prioritize. Revenue grew, expenses declined, we will be one of the only large clubs in Europe to post a profit. All 3 of those measures can be attributed in large part to Maldini’s work over the last several years: He has cut our largest cost (wages) while dramatically improving our performance on the pitch - resulting in revenue growth (Gazidis deserves credit as well obviously).

Yes, we didn’t win, but again this is sports and no one just wins year after year, especially as early into a project as we are. We won the Scudetto a year ago, Maldini built that team and hired the manager. We went to the CL SF this year and finished top 4 again. Financially, we accomplished our base level goal (top 4) and generated a windfall with progression to the semi-final.

It’s short-sighted if the decision was made because we didn’t win a title. Looking at the bigger picture, Maldini has generated incredible results, almost impossible truth be told. It’s a huge mistake to make a change based on this one season, just like I argued all year that discarding Pioli after 1 rough season didn’t make sense.

Americans don’t care that Maldini is a legend, I get that. It’s business, not personal. Got it. But it reeks of bad business to me.

My best guess is that Cardinale wanted to pull the trigger last year after Maldini went to Gazzeta and demanded authority. He absolutely couldn’t fire Maldini then from a PR perspective, so he gave him a year and the on field failures gave him the cover he wanted to make a move.

that would be ideal

except maldini publicly criticized the strategy a few times

thats typically not going to work out well

Bayern fired Oliver Kahn after winning the league and people were saying “this is what ambitious clubs do”

Food for thought

This season will depend on his managerial ability. Let’s see what he can do without any destabilizing forces. Caesar was assassinated today. Can Pioli be Augustus? We will have to wait and see. He may have his best season ever. I’m making the early decision to back my manager as I did in October 2019.

With Maldini gone, we need to keep Leao obviously regardless of the money offered
You know that if they trigger the buyout and Rafa says bye, Milan Literally can't say no right? :ibralol:

This, IMO, is what it comes down to. It started before Gerry officially took over with Maldini going to Gazetta against Gazidis and demanding more authority. It has continued this season.

Americans REALLY don’t like that shit.

I like Pioli, but pretending that this season's failures are on Maldini is ridiculous... we dropped 12 points to teams that finished 15th or worse. Take half of those points, and we're in 2nd. A
Who renewed Pioli last summer?

for all the doomsayers i really gotta ask, what was the alternative for gerry from a business standpoint?

maldini last year dragged out negotiations to get final say, and results wise he did not achieve his target.

can gerry really demote him and place furlani on his head for veto like gazidis? terrible pr for redbird if it were to get leaked to the press by maldini.
did gerry suggest it in the meeting and maldini said no or he outright fired him? no one knows/could know. if he did offer furlani as veto power and maldini refused than maldini is placing himself above the club and that's shameful.

"san siro will be empty without maldini" no it won't. in fact, san siro was empty during the banter era but it wasn't due to the mistreatment of any legend, but because of continuous neglect by another legend. elliot steadied the ship (a 'soulless american fund' and a vulture fund at that) with maldini's help, not because of him. placing boban and then gazidis is a testemant to that, and even boban got the boot when his views & actions didn't allign with elliot's.

sacking a milan legend is always a terrible call for a new owner but maldini forced gerry's hand on this one.

I understand, but they have a responsibility to put their foot down and tell him thats not ok, work on communication and keep things internal, rather than be tone deaf and have a shit show to deal with that they caused.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if pioli is sacked next and quickly.

I hope he isn't and someone gives him a real team to work with this season.

But in principle, between him and Maldini, the latter definitely deserved the boot first and a very firm one.

He did deliver, though. A shit ton of money.

Unless you’re telling me you believe Cardinale prioritizes results over $?

if they never talked to him about that misstep, fine…
that’s not completely fair

but youre assuming they didn’t

I bet Maldini got shit over last year for his airing of grievances
