The left-back moved to the Olimpico from Sporting Gijon last summer, but despite making 27 appearances in his debut season, the departure of coach Luis Enrique, coupled with Federico Balzaretti's arrival, saw his days in the Italian capital numbered.

However, he has now completed a move back to his native Spain, after successfully undergoing a medical examination on Friday.

"We have reached an agreement with AS Roma for the loan of Jose Angel Valdes to the club until the end of this season," a statement read on Real's offical website.

"We have a purchase option, which expires on June 15, 2013."

Real finished 12th in La Liga last season, their best finish since 2003, and start the new campaign away to Barcelona on August 18.

He never looked comfortable alongside Ibra. A personality thing I think. No one's fault, they just don't belong together. Pato often looked almost scared. With Ibra away he might get the space to grow that needs.
