Thats not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the likes of Pato, Ganso, Neymar etc.

They were all HEAVILY sponsored by nike and other corporations before ever accomplishing anything. Neymar is proving to be the exception, but the other two, not so much.

In the past.... rivaldo, cafu, previous generations did not receive these corporate sponsorships etc. until they'd proven to be 'stars' like say... kaka.

They are receiving money and praise on potential, not accomplishments. And that's dangerous because it is likely to kill your motivation.

Spot on.

It also happened with other players too like Denilson and Kleberson, Coco and Adriano - Most teams and sponsors buy on potential but it is hard to keep the players grounded when so much is given. It takes strong character and/or the right environment.

Jordan's talking about Pato here....

you could legitimately say... the effect jordan had on future generations bball players getting paid off potential. Ronaldo Fenomeno had on the footballing world and specifically young brazilians, with gigantic sponsorship deals when they've accomplished jack yet.

This is pretty understandable, but Pato didnt start out with the wage he has now. Pato did deliver his worth when he plays, so this is quite different regarding him.
All that is stopping pato right ow is injury, we cant say he isnt working hard, because we dont see him on the pitch to evaluate his growth.
If after a string of games he doesnt look better, then you could say this.

Its not about the wage (well not only about the wage).

Its that he was hyped before he had played 10-15 professional games.

Coaches (not only in Milan) were already treating him differently and people were anointing him "the next" then when he comes to Milan, Carlo and Silvio declare all of this to be true and he is given an easy time (if you believe the reports) and once he shows glimpses then his salary jumps and even more commercials come.

A main escalation of his salary though was Carlo wanting him at Chelsea and Pato and his agent using this to up his wages. Real was snooping too.

Common guys, it not always about money, if you look at the richest people in the world - Gates, Simms, Branson - they all started out looking to make billions, when they finally did make billions, their focus turned to making a name for themseleves.

At some point in a players career, they will have earnt more than they can spend and will want to be the best player in the game, both for club and country. Pato, playing for Milan, has that opportunity and will want to be remembered for being a one of the GREAT brazilians of the modern game.

I honestly believe that pato will start to perform when he gets back from injury, he has nothing else to do but prove himself. Their is also the world cup approaching in Brazil, which will be an added incentive to kick some arse.

Gates and Branson came from nothing, dont know Simms and got really big after the millions were rolling in but you are missing the point. You dont look to Gates etc - look at what their children will do.

I agree with Senatore's assessment in general and I know some of it applies to Pato. I dont know if the injury issues are because of this pampered lifestlye but I do know his play even when he was healthy always showed this lack of killer instinct to dominate the opposition. Many people always said it was because he was still a kid. I think it is also because he is Brazilian (not in a bad way). Even the best (not all but most) from Brazil have a laid back way and seem to just do enough to win and then have fun.

I think with Pato it is a combination off all these things creating this situation he is in.

I still think though that if he can get healthy he can be really good for us but that attitude of wanting to be the best or just like R9, I never saw it in his game except for the Napoli game. He is usually happy to just get on the scoreboard once or twice.

I don't really know where people get this from.

Pato's case is really unfortunate, maybe he'll never really reach his true potential due to his injury problems, but that's a different issue.

To say that he hasn't grown enough cause he's not committed enough or doesn't care is plain stupid, Whenever he's fit he mostly performs. Anyway time will tell, he's going to be with the club at least for this season for sure, so lets see what happpens before passing any judgments.

well said.

obviously, you can't point ot 'one thing' but i do think it's a major factor.

you look at cavani, and everything he has (which isn't much in the grand scheme), he EARNED

pato..... he was a major nike sponsored athlete before he ever won anything in europe. Sure some guys like messi/ronaldo were able to succeed beyond that. But a LARGE majority are more like pato.... inability to 'push themselves' because they have it easy and the hype.

Am I the only one who notices, only times he has 'that look' is vs. a barca or something. That's cool, but if you don't have that work ethic and dominate week in/week out, you won't nbe great

see, this is my biggest issue.

He plays when he wants to. He really does lack that drive you see in ronaldo or messi or sheva or (insert) who want to embarass/beat everyone.

He gets all motivated v. a certain team, but other times he looks like he couldnt care less.

That's NOT a champion

seedorf was not lazy, he was just declining.

its not surprising, any game he found space, he did well. When he was pressed, he struggled.

So we can conclude it's all Ronaldo fault?

Well Jordan already semi-attributed it was his own fault...so yeah I do think Ronaldo is guilty :D (jk).

The frustrating thing is, yes I do see all that in Pato, I do think he can be WC, I do think he's got an amazing goal sense, great heading technique, he can kill you with his pace, but you do nothing by just living off potential and at 23, potential isn't enough.

nah....Kobe's Abate's cousin....one can't pass the other can't cross....

Actually Abate can cross, the hard part is not hitting the first man...

Kobe is more like robinho.

lots of flair, some good skill level. HIGHLY inefficient scorer

:fp::lol::lol::lol::lol:

While I agree that Pato does not have hunger to be a beast of a player. sorry, but Seedorf was lazy. Maybe you call it aging but he really was lazy. As I pointed out before, the year that we won the scudetto before Dinho left, Seedorf was running, defending (Yeah, defending); however, once Dinho left he stopped defending and cared only about attacking. That it is why I thought that season that Allegri told both that only one of them will be kept after mid-season.

LOL - Kobe can pass way better than Abate can cross. He only thinks about passing as an afterthought whereas we have no clue what Abate is thinking about most of the time.

I would love Robinho to be Kobe. Kobe really exceeded his talent level through inflated ego and sheer will to try and live up to that ego. Balo could be Kobe if he decides football is more than a hobby

Seedorf was declining but he was in total dont give a fuck mode for 90% of the seasons. You could say his attitude set the stage for Pato :D but the big difference is Seedor's resume is almost as big as his ass and he could afford to coast where Pato hasnt accomplished much and shouldve been made to drop the training wheels long ago.

I remember so many times Carlo and Leo and even Allegri saying Pato needs to mature in his game but it was always said as a defense than impetus. And from the reports, there was never much done in training to force Pato to be better than OK.

Still hoping he uses this year to launch himself though.

completely false.

kobe is the biggest underachiever known to man. His skill level is high, but he's not a very good player.

Think about it... DWade led a horrendous miami team with a line up of him, arroyo, beasley, QRich, Jermaine Oneal to the f'n playoffs.

That's a stack of shit.

Kobe with a more talented team, IN HIS PRIME, didn't even make playoffs. And Kobe has much more raw talent than Wade does.

He has zero effect on winning. It's all shaq or pau/bynum/odom. Minute Pau declined, lakers declined. Coincidence?

Just read an interview with one of the most talented 20 year old basketball player in Europe. All it did it reminded me what kind of pussy Pato is.

This guy said "I hurt my ankle but I wanted to play for the national team so I went with them on the tournament hoping the ankle would last... It didn´t. I still feel the pain and it hurts but sometimes you just gotta play through so one day you can enjoy."

Pato doesn´t have not even 1% of this dudes drive and determination. Fucking pussy.

I support the club not the player. Best thing for the club would be him being sold months ago.

Can we make Pato a part of a Bojan - Pato swap somehow?
