I started following Milan ~1990. I was a kid, so I didn't pay too much attention to what was going on behind the scenes, and the media coverage obviously wasn't like it is today anyway.

As long as I have followed Milan, Maldini leaving the club has never been a serious issue. I am sure there were bids that were rejected out of hand.
