You see, that's where I disagree. I think the 343/352 that Pioli used against Tottenham was actually the answer against Inter. But he didn't use that.

Even with Leao available, that was probably the better choice in the first leg.
IMO you cannot use a 3ATB without Leao because our squad clearly isn't built to play this system for a sustainable period of time. It works when you can defend deep and hit it on the counter to Leao and Giroud, but when the former is missing, we're in deep shit.

In any case, Pioli was metaphorically always coming out as a loser from that game. If he played defensively and lost 2-0, he would've been criticized for being too defensive in a CL SF and not finding attacking solutions with a Brahim - Giroud - Saelemaekers trio, and if he played his usual formation, he'd be criticized for not adapting to a 3ATB again and hope it would replicate the Tottenham games.

Again, we are going to return to glory with Moncada in charge--I'm all for it.

But I'm not even asking to be a dick, I'm genuinely asking what your hunch is: do you think Adli was a Maldini signing or a Moncada signing?
Hard to say but given the characteristics of the best signings under Maldini, Adli and the players from the final two seasons are drastically different

Without knowing the framework of their structure it's hard to say but I would assume Moncada&his staff gave Maldini a long list of players and he picked out Adli? I'm not sure. Even that summer Adli wasn't by any means the first choice

I think that summer the top pick was Kone

Remember that one interview Maldini gave, I think it was before the Super Cup? Things were going south and he made the excuse Milan were in the top 4 and still fighting for the CL, Coppa Italia and Super Cup. Didn't he also say they need to work within the parameters? He seemed like he was falling in line with management. Then he suddenly changed his tune & gave a few interviews after saying Milan need to spend in order to continue to grow.

So why did Pioli use a 3ATB system against Inter in the league, using Messias as a RCM, dropping Leao when he was healthy... and chose to use Origi?

I'd love to hear his theory as to how playing Messias at RCM in a 352 he never used while dropping Leao against Inter was a good idea.

Pioli started Pobega against Juventus to great effect against their 352, without warning. Those were the sorts of tactical moves that made me have faith in Pioli.

His decision making in 2023 has run counter to the entirety of his tenure with Milan until that point.

I don't believe that he had a shit squad, especially since he wasn't just losing to Inter (who used the same setup in every game against us in 2023) but that he continuously struggled against bottom-half teams, which for me, makes the excuses for Pioli wear thin for me.

I hope that the old, innovative Pioli returns, for Milan's sake.
You are right about bottom half teams but this team is not a creative team . So this team can only be successful when playing good defense. We don’t have so much options that can be effective against defending teams. For example if we had Dybala instead of cdk who can’t sleep alone in the dark dybala would have gain maybe 8-10 points by himself

We even don’t have an average dead ball kicker in our squad which is very important against defending teams. Even we had Hakan we maybe would have 8-10 points more just with dead balls.

Leao is our only option. No creative midfielder, no attacking player besides leao , no average dead ball kicker , midfielders with no passing ability.

This is a defensive team. It is a great success to have scudetto last year and play cl semifinal this year with this squad.

We need amc , rw and st desperately for 2 years also one of them absolutely should use dead balls effectively

Interesting. I'd be inclined to think that the best young creative midfielder in Ligue 1 would be a Moncada choice.

If Moncada wants to fill our squad with Adlis, I'm all for it.

They way they handled it makes you wonder if Gerry even knows what Maldini means to the club.

I think Elliot knew what Maldini was to Milan so they made the stooge do it.
Ultras knew who was Maldini & yet they insulted him in his retirement game.
I really like how status brought up only when it fits the narrative.

I don't support Pioli and I don't want him at the club but I will say this

At least with him being involved in the transfer process the club's limited resources won't be wasted

Over the past two seasons, Milan has spent 50-70m with very little talent accumulated to show for it because apparently, Pioli wasn't on board this whole time. A bit ridiculous

I don't even know if I believe that because it is gross incompetence

Ok. Never going to catch up, and I am spending way to much time reading and responding to posts (it is impacting my work and life). Also, way too much emotion right now. I need to drop off a while (will be back towards the end of mercato).

Some thoughts:
- not happy with what happened, but I can understand it, and I sure hope we find a way to be successful this way. I have to hope, I am a fan.
- we lost a charismatic leader, so we will be less of a family and more of a business. We are losing much of the magic that is Milan, it will have an impact for sure.
- we lose a competent leader
OTOH
- we really need to operate more as a business. Sell players when it is time, sack people that do not perform, forget emotional attachments.
- slow growth is better than no growth. It will take longer to dominate CL, but we can still get results. In this economic situation, unless you have deep pockets or many "levers", big spending is not likely. Investors look for businesses that are profitable, and Gerry needs investors to pay back Elliott.
- as much as I love and respect Maldini, maybe the new management team will get us a more effective attack :-)

One can only hope. Forza Milan Sempre!!!

That was a radicalized Pioli who tried to do anything to stop leaking goals after the 2-5 loss to Sassuolo.
Because we stopped using it after the 3-1 loss to Udinese and our first game back with the 4231 was.... 0-4 away at Napoli. Then, for a month, we didn't concede many chances over 8-9 games and it looked like the 4231 formation was working again up until the Derby.

Introducing Thiaw AFTER GABBIA GOT INJURED.

"Diaz is a complete player." 🤣🤣🤣 fucking mediocre interista shit
The fact that Thiaw, who supposedly now is the only transfer from the summer who had talent, didn't start playing until January, instead of Gabbia, is hilarious to me.

Pioli started Gabbia in his brand-new 352 against Inter. The 352 with Messias at RCM. That we never tried before.

People want to put fault on Pioli for Messias, and yet, in one of the most important games, Pioli is using Messias in a brand-new position?

I know that Maldini wasn't perfect as an SD, no one is. But if someone wants to be like "well... Maldini got CDK... and Florenzi... and Origi..." okay, cool, but if you want to look at the amount of mistakes that Pioli has made, it's incredible.

Every coach in Belgium has said that you have to use CDK differently, and Pioli never did, lol.

Thiaw looked awesome from the first second he got to play with us, but Pioli didn't use him until there was an emergency.

If you want to be objective, fine, let's be objective, and go over Pioli's choices in 2023, but people don't want to do that.

At the end of the day, Milan finished with 70 points. They should have finished with probably at least 80 & 2nd in the table considering the amount of points dropped to bad sides, playing with basically no right side & losing an important mid.

Unless there's some backlash from some of the core players like Theo, Leao, Mike for the Maldini sacking, I think things should be fine if the proper holes are addressed this summer. Maldini went multiple seasons without properly addressing RW . Winning cures all.

I mean come on.. those weren’t normal circumstances after losing 4-0 to Lazio and 2-5 to Sassuolo. It was a massive head loss by Pioli, possibly equivalent to Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final.

The experiment went horrible, and luckily he reverted back to his beloved 4231 formation 2 months after playing around with a 3ATB formation to save his job.

As I said it's hard to say without knowing the details but let's assume Theo and Leao were Moncada's jewels (Theo I know was, Leao gets credited to Boban but I dunno)

I would say he favors players with certain characteristics. In particular, physical advantages

Adli isn't close to that. He's a very technical player but lacks a lot from an athletic standpoint and obviously clashed with Pioli's wants

I think that summer Kone was the guy because he fits the mold of what I assume a Moncada player is but they couldn't land him

I think Pioli refused to use the players he got in the proper manner, constantly.

I am looking forward to Pioli's solutions now that he's part of our transfer choices.
Signing players that the coach doesn’t want is never a good thing though. Why is there such a disconnect between what the coach wants and what the directors are doing?

Give him the players he wants. If he fails, fire him. That’s all MM had to do.

Maldini boxed himself into a corner when he foolishly gave Pioli an extension. What money is Red Bird going to give you for a new manager when you quickly sack the guy you just extended with a significant raise? He would've had to hire another mediocre Italian manager currently unemployed to take over.
