IMO you cannot use a 3ATB without Leao because our squad clearly isn't built to play this system for a sustainable period of time. It works when you can defend deep and hit it on the counter to Leao and Giroud, but when the former is missing, we're in deep shit.You see, that's where I disagree. I think the 343/352 that Pioli used against Tottenham was actually the answer against Inter. But he didn't use that.
Even with Leao available, that was probably the better choice in the first leg.
In any case, Pioli was metaphorically always coming out as a loser from that game. If he played defensively and lost 2-0, he would've been criticized for being too defensive in a CL SF and not finding attacking solutions with a Brahim - Giroud - Saelemaekers trio, and if he played his usual formation, he'd be criticized for not adapting to a 3ATB again and hope it would replicate the Tottenham games.
