While we have many stats to rate defenders and attackers, we do not have proper stats to rate midfielders like Ricci. We can even rate offensive midfielders and defensive midfielders by taking a look on their xA, forward passes in final 3rd, tackles etc. - but we're still not able to properly evaluate Bennacer's and Ricci's of this world. xbuildup or xchain doesn't show a lot as they're strongly connected with the overall quality of the team. Same went to Tonali while he was in Brescia, he played in much different style than his version we saw in Milan.
As far as I know there are no algorythms or stats helpful enough to weigh and measure their job appropriately.
You either see it or not. I do see it in Ricci.

That said I researched this shit recently and according to the Official Laws of the Game assists aren't even counted at all. This makes sense since while people gave a shit about goals back then(they still weren't as obsessed with stats) nobody gave a fuck back then about how many assists a playmaker had, they cared about the quality of the assist and his overall performance instead.
So, it just seems like the numbers come from dubious sources like Transfermarkt or Whoscored who aren't official authorities at all.

Classically an assist was a clean pass to the guy who scored.
Deflected shots and winning pens counting as assists = zoomer nonsense.
