As opposed to any other system with fullbacks and wingers? (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1)

If a winger is caught out of position in a 4-4-2, the other team can overload your fullbacks and maybe drag your CMs wide and create space in the middle.
It's vital, more than in any other system, to maintain the shape in a 4-4-2. Current Atletico, Sacchi's Milan, even Leicester this year have had success because they've been disciplined positionally in defense.

The wingers have much less defensive responsibilities when there's an extra mid to cover them, for example in a 4-3-3 (Barca and Messi).

Also Beckham and Giggs did a lot of running.
