Nah. Montolivo found his form as CM; however, our buildup was too slow and became a single-player-depended. Not to say that we were not good; however, we were not great either.

The fact someone like him prefers to sit back is also hurting us. It could be fine, but he's not a Van Bommel who can dominate the midfield on the ground and aerially. He's obviously not a deep-lying playmaker either to make up for it. This forces the other midfielders to be as complete as they can be to compensate for it, which ours can't.
The midfield is far too easy to penetrate. It lacks creativity, energy, aerially strong players and cohesion. De Jong's characteristics and role plays the largest part in this.

Anyway, we probably wouldn't have conceded the equalizer if he was a typically tall anchor.

I will not say you are wrong because DeJong is not Van Bommel; however, DeJong has been immense this season.

Last season we played our best with a two pivot system but went down the drains after Nogel's injury.
Easy to penetrate? To me it seems more of when we were up, oue team immediately regressed into our own field. Not to mention, Muntari has been ok/good this season; however, he tends to venture too much upfront.
We could put Monty as anchor and move DeJong at LCM; however, it would be the same because Monty would need to cover 2 spots.

DJ playing like hell superb. so much concentration, serenity, seriousness.

Now we have 3, 4 real, serious players in the team: DJ, Montolivo, Kaka' and Shaarawy when fit. The rest play on and off during the game with concentration.

I really want him to stay as he is my favourite midfielder at the club. I also fear the sales of our other capable players.

I agree that playing him at CDM slows our play and make us very predictable... but to bench him, even if we play with Monto as CDM is going too far. I can see him doing well in a Gattuso kind of role.

Because he's far from ideal for a side CM role. Monto isn't Pirlo(a pipsqueak or ridiculously creative) for us to need a Gattuso next to him and De Jong isn't a Gattuso. He's a semi-anchor, semi-destroyer...a typical double pivot player.

De Jong in a side CM role could be the key to afford having Poli in a 3 man midfield, but it would only be a stop-gap solution at best. It won't take us out of this gigantic hole.

Problem is still our LCM in our midfield. If we got a tall, well rounded midfielder like Strootman, De Jong could easily play RCM and still cut it. I think his creativity is underrated. He doesn't just break up open play - he can play good passes and I think could play a Poli type game.

But he's still better in a two man midfield. Once we have Rami, who's a complete air-marshal, De Jong's height won't be so painfully noticed.

Nothing in Milan's midfield is ideal. I just think it sounds silly to say we should put DJ on the bench in a 3-man midfield when you have Nocerino, Muntari and Poli (who I don't think is that good, especially tactically) as his competitors.

I haven't seen DJ in side CM role, and I don't think you have either, so who really knows how well he can do.
