Great player? A bit of a stretch really. He's a good player that maximized his talent by professionalism and work ethic. But he is NOT on the level of all time greats or even icons of any top club. A good right back in his prime... but he didn't even play for Argentina in the 06 and 10 World Cups... and Maicon easily took his spot when he arrived in 2006. They just had to find a place for captain Zanetti because he was too politically strong.

They put him on the right, left, midfield... whatever... he just HAS to play. If he was that special he would have been a lock in a certain position, no?

Dunno man, I havent seen many players that have beaten him, he is very good defensively, and offensively he is very good, taking on many defenders and all at the same go, he is also a very good leader because he can inspire his team mates with a great play, plus the fact that Maicon played as RB is thanks to his versatility, I personally think Maicon is a better RB on his day, but Zanetti is one of the most versatile players ive seen, doing really well in any position he is played in, and he is very good on the tactical level, you dont need to tell him what to do, for example last night, he spotted that De Sciglio was being the main threat after Nagatomo went off and he took care of him so to say, then Urby tried to double up and it didnt work, it just looked difficult down his side, I was hoping Allegri would ask the team to attack down Inter's left because Zanetti really blocked off the right line completely. As for his seclusion from world cup squads, for me that is one of the most unjust decisions, I cannot recall why he was in 06 but in 10 it was purely down to Maradona's stupidity, especially after the season both he and Cambiasso had for Inter that year, it was a crime, Maradona paid for it badly, he wanted 11 Maradona's on the pitch.

Can't comment on Baresi since I never caught him live. Maldini - did he go steal attention after his teammates every game by kissing the Milan shirt and sucking up to the curva? I mean, the only reason they ruined his final game was because he refused to suck up to them. A true man.

And Maldini never HAD to play all the matches in his later years.

I recall him kissing the shirt only 3 times. In 05 after his return from injury, 08 derby, and his farewell. Maybe there's more but 3 times in 11 years isn't even comparable to 3 times in the last 3 games.

His presence didn't stop the club from purchasing players in his position and playing them. You're missing my point... Zanetti has to play, period. Pippo didn't touch the field much in his last 3 seasons.

His primary position is a right back. An inexperienced guy came from the French league and took his spot, thus forcing him to shuffle between left back and midfield... hardly a great player.

A very good player though. But a great player? Nah. He was a world class RB but as I said Maicon took the spot off him and since then he's shuffled between positions (mostly played midfield) and hardly was anything special. Solid and always gives 100%, but tons of better players out there.

Mourinho had a role for all the senior Inter players. He even constantly gave Materazzi minutes especially in derbies and important matches, even gave him a CL cameo.

Matrix then got pissed when Benitez didn't do the same and make him cameo at the club world cup final.

As Maldini hinted, dinners with player etc. Basically they expect players to treat them specially and acknowledge them like they're special and unique, or else they don't give them support.

I don't hate Zanetti...I just don't get Zanetti. But nah can't hate him, he's just so simpleton, I can't hate him.

But I really don't get him. He's never been to me something more than a rating 6 of a player, but he does put a lot of heart in his performances to be completely fair, he's never been worse than a 6 nor more than 6, he is that. But he's a legend, a legend based on his consistency more than anything, but everyone thinks he's an amazing player one of the best RBs ever. And I mean I really appreciate how much effort he puts in it, but I just don't know how to rate him, if I say he's the best RB I've seen in Serie A, that's bs, the best one is Thuram by far and then Cafú. But then I feel like I'm underrating Zanetti.

I believe it's completely unfair the way the Argentina NT has treated him, but then again there has to be something wrong with him for 2 coaches (or 1 coach and Maradona) to have left him out of the WC, considering well, he's by far the best defensive player Argentina has available.

He basically looks the same as he did 15 years ago in every sense, hair style, and fitness levels. I don't think he'll ever retire, only way is if he wants to spend time with his family (which for the simpleton he is, sounds like that could be it, but that would've happened 2 years ago). I don't get him.

I don't care if he overly celebrates with the fans, even if sometimes yeah it can be a little provocative, it's his thing, at the end of the day, he's celebrating with the people that applaud him for running and then passing the ball backwards , so it's fair. I don't care how vocal he was with calciopoli, that was pure desperation, I can imagine that if I'm commited to a losing team like he was, I would probably said stupid things like that too. My thing with Zanetti is something completely different.

Inexperienced or not, Maicon was great as soon as he joined Inter, it only makes sense to play them both and have Zanetti use his versatility to maximize the performance of the team.

I think this maybe his only real problem, that being a club symbol, he must always be compared to Maldini, and that is an honor that is impossible to be matched, not even Totti or Del Piero can earn the status of Maldini, but out of them 3 I think Zanetti comes closest in terms of reliability but he is certainly the least cool out of them 3 I agree, Zanetti is a nerd
