What I’m curious about is how much of our success really was down to Moncada, because going to a director role from scouting is a huge step. We’re already seeing some revisionism go on with “it wasn’t Maldini it was all Moncada all along.” Which of course he was a huge part of it but I’m also not sure Maldini still wasn’t hugely important in our turnaround, obviously. At the very least we’ve lost a crucial part of convincing some players, we know this. I would think Maldini and Moncada had some shared vision, it wasn’t just one or the other.
We will have to see what Maldini says later on, I keep hearing about how it’s a difference in ambition and I’m not totally sure about that. Maldini has been here for 4 years and he had a long back and forth with both Elliott and now Redbird, he very well knows we can’t really move up until the stadium happens and we keep growing revenue. Like I said yesterday, I bet Gerry gave Maldini full control in exchange for saying “we’re gonna continue the low cost stuff.” Maldini had a bad season with that control, and it was either split decisions(he wasn’t gonna do that again) or goodbye.
I can kinda get it from that perspective, but what sucks is I think they’re underestimating the pull Maldini had in attracting players, and I also think Maldini and Massara would have had a better summer. All clubs miss of some signings and windows, things had mostly gone well under them and I was confident we’d have a good summer mercato.
