I don't know about politics but there are some great novels about Rome written by the Australian Colleen Mc Cullough, famous for "The thorn Birds". She wrote a series of 8 novels that I read them all beginning with "the first man in Rome" that talks about Gaius Marius and ending with "Anthony and Cleopatra" Among others " the grass crown" Caesar". They are fictions but very historically accurate. For British history Ken Follett is great, especially "World without end" and Pillars of the Earth".
