I am pro Maldini to the max but I get the feeling that sacking him might end up being for the better or at least I am hoping so.

I wouldn't say so. Pioli has been a Milan coach for 4 years and he hasn't given a single minute to a Primavera player. The best our Primavera players can hope for is a loan to Serie B.
Just a random example - Chaka Traore featured in 3 Serie A games in 2020/2021 for Parma (he actually gave us the win ). Yeah, just a few minutes, but still something for such a young player. After that - 2 full seasons with Milan and zero call ups for the men's team.

But I thought Pioli was very good with younger players
