I know there is a notion now held by the younger generation that people should reject Christianity because it is the religion of the colonizing power. The sentiment that they took everything from the people so in turn the descendants should reject all their customs.
I don't know if that is the filmmakers belief or played into how he made the film.

There are some breakdowns on YT with regards to references and hidden connection in Sinners but haven't watched any outside of Heavy Spoilers who I watch for most everything film and TV related.

I think the problem the film gets itself in here is that it kinda rejects an atheist world view by its supernatural plot. So the question has to be asked what is the alternative the film proposes? The best case scenario would probably be paganism if you take the magic from the witch doctor as such, which is very problematic in itself as paganism regularly was very inhumane. The black African slavers were largely pagan to my knowledge, paganism is notorious for human sacrifice (not every pagan religion but compared to book religions there is a clear trend) and overall painting it as better goes against the historic tendency and reality imo. If not paganism we kinda get into something close to theistic satanism or so.
