Maradona, though ppl would argue you can't compare players from different eras.

Very few people can answer this question, only those who've watched both in action. I'd choose Maradona, but that'd not be fair to Pele, who i haven't seen play.

I think there are many people who can't answer this question, because they haven't seen both players playing or one of them.

IMO, Pelu (Diego's nickname) is better than Pele. Diego played in an era where the game is a lot faster, defense was more organized, tackles were more dangerous and heineous. If you look at videos of Pele (or even soccer in the 60s and 70s), everything seemed so slow, easy to get pass the defender, goalie looked so stupid and slow. Basically the game was seemingly played at walking distance.

Sure, Pele is brilliant and great. Brazil WC 70 is definitely the greatest team in history. But can he score 1,000+ goals if he played in the 80s? Will he got so much time and space to place the ball? He got a dose of what Diego received every weekend in Italy + Spain the only time he got seriously injured in WC 66 vs Bulgaria. And Pele never played in Europe.

Brazil still won the WC in 62 with Pele basically absent the whole tournament. In WC 70 Pele was surrounded by players like Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivellino, Carlos Alberto and Gerson; all destined to be in the greatest 100 players ever.

Argentina will never win the WC 86 if Diego wasn't there. Carlos Bilardo built a solid but unspectacular team around him (can you name the rest of team except Valdano and Burruchaga?).

Pele's greatest ever goal was said to be the one in WC 58 final vs Sweden, but in recent years you've seen many players scoring goals like that. Aside from that Arab player in WC 94, have you ever seen a goal like Diego's 2nd goal vs England in WC 86?

Lastly, Pele is overhyped by FIFA who wanted to promote a clean image of soccer where the likes of Maradona will never be accepted.

1. Pele was great for his time. Greater then Maradona was in his time.

2. Pele never playedin Europe, but he always beat the Europe Club with Santos. The italian players said afer the final in '70 "we said to our selfs he's human, we can stop him. we were wrong".

3. "Aside from that Arab player in WC 94, have you ever seen a goal like Diego's 2nd goal vs England in WC 86?" - yes, George Weah for Milan and Nicolae Dobrin for FC Arges in 1978.

I agree with gaizka22, Mardona is a truely legend, the king in football. Pele is also a great player, but at his time, the football defenders are very poor (I'd done better than them:tongue: :D ), it was easy to score a lot.

By the way, remember at Maradona's time, there were a lot of great players like Van Basten....

Not really, Italy just had a hard game against Germany in the semi-final + they played 120 mintues, very tired !

Maradona was great. But Pele was greater then him. In Pele's time there were great players like Just Fontaine. I just what the italian players said. Look it up.

Sum journalist asked Maradona who was better on the field, him or Pele.

"My mother says it was me and Pele's mother say it was him,"

Maradona said... his grin irrepressible.

Of course debatable :)

Probably the only time Pele and Santos played vs European team is in the old version of Intercontinental Cups. Aside from that, mostly are exhibition and friendly games. Maradona played in Barcelona (had his leg broken) and Italy (the toughest defense in the world) for 9 years (discounting Sevilla)

Like I said, Brazil 70 is filled with great players. Pele might be the brightest there but can he shine without all the players I mentioned? Argentina 86 has less talent than say...Brazil 94 (who is still below Brazil 82 when it comes to talent)

Glad you mentioned Weah, I might also add Kaka's goal at CL vs Fenerbache. My point is , everytime that kind of goal is scored, your thoughts will go to Diego's goal. And may I add, Weah's goal come from an counter attacking situation :)

Have the video of this Nicolae Dobrin? :D

Agree completely. Unfortunately, I rely on vintage video to see Pele's greatness. I was fortunate enough to see Maradona play live on a few occasions. Football isn't a game that is dominated by an individual like basketball is. Maradona tested this cliche with astonishing success. He was truly the one player who could take a football match of the highest order on the most prestigous platform and exert a dominance that we will probably never see again.

Well, no. Back in the '70 the comunist party had power in Romania and all the video's are hold by TVR (romanian public television). Dobrin scored that gol in a Dinamo - FC Arges game. Last day of the championship, Dinamo needed a win to win the title. In the 94 minut Dobrin gets the ball at the center of the field and scores just like Maradona did in 86, wining the championship for FC Arges. He was the best Romanian player of all time. Better then Hagi. Real would have paid 1 mil $, after Arges beat them 2-1 in CL, for him but the comunist didn't let him leave the country.

Better than Hagi? Wow! He must be that good. Could you share some story about him (national caps won, goals scored etc). Too bad we (at least myself) never heard about him. Was WC 90 the first time Romania qualified for the WC?

He was like George Best. He had trouble with alcohol too. :D
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Dobrin

Ilie Balaci was one of the greats too
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilie_Balaci

We played for the 1st time in WC '70, losing England 0-1, Brazil 2-3 and beating Czechoslovakia.
