Things that as far as we know turned out to be completely wrong so a lot of hot air for nothing in the end. Gazidis actually neved hid that he met with Rangnick to explore a future signing, and Pioli after that season even went out saying that Gazidis was very straight forward with him, that no definite decision would be taken until the end of the season and that Pioli would get a fair chance to prove he's the man for the job. In fact Pioli got confirmed even before the last day of the season - even before we secured CL qualification. After hearing Piolis words that's where Gazidis eventually won me over.

Gerry has a long way to get there. He put himself into a position where as @Samaldinho says there's really very little margin. Back then Milan came from banther era and a 5:0 loss to Atalanta. Now we're a Scudetto winning team that reached CL Semis. Taking that decision is bold as hell and only at least the same success will paint this decision as a positive one in hindsight.
