The question is: would we have been better without him? Well, on my view, we wouldn't have gotten CL in 12-13, nor would we have been competitive under Sinisa - the two most consistent seasons from Monto. Every other season was him playing injured or just flat-out being unavailable because he literally broke a leg or blew out his knee or whatever other random, cursed injury he picked up.
The problem was always that people hated Monto's guts, for various reasons, but nobody ever wanted to provide a solution. Fine, Monto is the biggest fodder ever. Worst captain of all time. Literal cancer. Who replaces him in all those Banter teams? Who would have made us play better? Or even further, single-handedly willed us out of Banter? Nigel fucking De Jong, as so many suggested? I can't.
People just need to come to terms that Banter destroyed many good players and coaches, and that we were fucked up until we finally had some spending power and competent front office leadership in the form of Boban, Maldini, and Ricky. Until those guys walked in the door, we were fucked. Players came here to die. Managers came here to die. The club was fucking cursed. It's not Monto's fault. It wasn't anybody's fault except Berlu, if there needs to be someone to blame.
Regardless, I hope all this Monto talk tempers some of you doom and gloomers. Pioli's largely lost the plot with us, I'll admit, but our current problems pale in comparison to what I am assuming most of you had to endure during Banter. That half of you knuckleheads think we should sell Leao because he's been out of form, despite the team winning and steadying the ship based on collective team efforts with a zillion players out injured, is just ludicrous. From Suso ball under Rino where we had no other plan for when Suso got iced out in a game, to Pioli ball where our best player can play like shit for 2 months and we still rake in points to sit comfortably in the table. I don't want to say that some of you are spoiled, but some of you are spoiled.
Give me 3rd and 8 points clear of 4th with world class players in the squad over fucking about in 6th to 10th, losing every other game, no quality young players, shit old players, bad contracts, no investment, etc. etc. etc. We got it real fucking good right now, so people's bitching should only be centered on us needing to raise the bar, not bitching and moaning that we're actually shit, because we're not. Shit would be Roma right now. We're not that, thank God.
