I can see him fitting there more than the SS position that will be reserved for Nkunku/Leao. Much more of a free role that can utilize Puli's creativity (on his good day) and free roaming abilties, has also played on multiple positions and can be adaptable.

Who in their right mind would pay up front for Santi after the couple years he's had?

If loan with option is all we can do, then go for it. He's not gonna play with us anymore at this point so the best we can hope for is a high option and if he plays well it gets triggered. If not, hopefully he performs ok this year and raises his value from the almost nothing he is worth right now. Or, actually becomes the player we thought maybe he could be.

His numbers at Erdeviese were unreal for 2 seasons in a row, and he had a very solid 6 months after his January signing here with 5G+2A, best G+A per 90' in all of the top 5 leagues IIRC. Guy is only 25, and with strikers, 80% of their abilities is confidence-based.

A change of scenery is needed for him (however, he wouldn't be the first striker Allegri did not know how to use), and a 15m-20m valuation (even outright purchase) is in the realm of reason for a guy of his profile. It's not as if this club itself hadn't tried multiple times to resurrect prospects' careers with gambles like these (Nkunku, Puli).

All in all, just his 25/26 season was abysmal; it's hardly as if he slumped for 2/3 seasons in a row à la Tomori/RLC/Leao, etc.

2011 Scudetto was impressive against an Inter squad who retained almost everyone from the treble team except Mourinho and Balotelli. But 2012 losing out to an average Juve balanced it out.
2013 3rd place was an overachievement. But 2026 5th place balances it out and 2013-14 half season was Giampaolesque.

2011 CL performance was pathetic, 2012 CL was decent, 2013 CL had highs and lows but overall was a disappointment. 2013-14 CL group stage was decent given the squad.

Every single Coppa Italia season were pathetic.
