Blog: Young offenders

Michel Platini has spoken out on English clubs snatching Italian youngsters from their academies and Steve Wilson agrees with the UEFA President
Imagine if Parma had been able to draft Giuseppe Rossi into their squad at some point over the past four years. What if the striker had been able to train alongside Alberto Gilardino in 2004-05, break into the first team with Luca Cigarini and Daniele Dessena in 2005-06 and emerge as the club's top goleador in 2006-07. He may have even been able to score the goals to keep them in Serie A in 2007-08 before leaving for one of Italy's big four in a money-spinning deal this summer.

That is how it would have worked in the old days, a young talent learning the ropes at a provincial team, working his way up the squad ladder before becoming the club hero and earning a move to the big city. However, Rossi's story took a detour in 2004 when he was poached by Manchester United, that same summer the Gialloblu lost Arturo Lupoli to Arsenal. Both teenagers could join the English clubs due to rules that prevent Italian sides giving players under 16 a professional contract.

This summer we have seen Reggina's Vincenzo Camilleri join Chelsea while Atalanta's Fabio Zamblera headed to Newcastle United, and then there is Davide Petrucci. The 16-year-old had been hailed as Roma's new Francesco Totti but was bought by Manchester United for just £200,000. As part of the deal they promised to find his father a job as a gardener, although with Davide earning £95,000 at Old Trafford will he really need to get mud under his finger nails?

Let us not forget this is the same Manchester United who have bleated all summer about a bigger club circling Cristiano Ronaldo. The same Manchester United who have gone crying to FIFA with a letter of complaint because Real Madrid has been openly offering sweeteners to him via the media. The same Manchester United who see fit to target a smaller club crippled by its association rules and take advantage of the situation to net a valuable Italian gem on the cheap. Got Hypocrisy?

UEFA President Michel Platini has waded into the debate and hopes to work with the EC to tailor labour laws for football in order to stop English clubs stealing young Italian and Spanish talent - and not before time. Why should clubs on the peninsula waste time nurturing youngsters only to see them stolen just as they are about to blossom? If this trend continues will we see more clubs investing the money set aside for the youth academies in the summer transfer market instead.

It is also detrimental to English football. First XIs are already awash with foreigners and if the youth teams head that way where will the homegrown talent turn? Italy? We already have Kris Thackray - rejected by Newcastle at 16 - on the books of Reggina and preparing for a loan spell at Ravenna in 2008-09. For once I applaud Platini's politics, UEFA are there to protect the interests of all European clubs and Leagues and by fixing this loophole he will again put a smile on Italian faces.

I agree with that to an extent, English clubs shouldn't be taking young players like that, although you can hardly blame them, there just taking advantage which is understandable even if it is wrong.

Its got absolutely nothing to do with the Ronaldo saga though, and I think before Platini adresses this he needs to fix all this match-fixing thats going/went on.

i guess you cant blame the english teams for taking advantage of the siuation but its ridiculously unfair for them to be allowed to sign an italian teams youth players before the italian team.

Spezia go into liquidation Tuesday 15 July, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Messina's collapse, another club is heading for meltdown, as Spezia's owners started the liquidation process.

“We worked hard to save the side at the last minute, but in the end it was not enough, as we needed over £2m,” revealed President Attilio Garbini.

“Now I will call a meeting of the Board of Directors and the next step for the club is liquidation.”

Spezia were in Serie B last season, but poor form, financial problems and a points penalty for failing to hand in paperwork before a deadline saw them relegated.

The Ligurian club was set to play in Serie C1, but their financial collapse means that place will be left open to another outfit.

It is the second major bankruptcy in Italian football this week, as Messina's owners the Franza family confirmed they could not find the money needed to salvage the Sicilian club.

There is still some slender hope for Messina and Spezia, as if another group of investors offers to buy up the sporting title via the Lodo Petrucci, they can begin again from Serie C2.

It is a great shame for Italian football to lose Spezia, who won the 1944 Scudetto.

I lost the list.
Lucchese with 103 years old, a team from the Italian 3rd division (with serie B and A appearances during some seasons) has "passed away" after not being able to pay 1.8 million euros of player salaries. Between the coaches that passed by the club was Lippi, season 1991-92.

Sad ending

Buffon Repeats: Milan Are Favourites
Gianluigi Buffon has repeated the comments he made a few weeks ago, and believes Milan are still the favourites for this year’s Scudetto.

The upcoming Serie A season could be one of the most exciting in recent years, with Inter, Milan, Juventus, Roma, and even possibly Fiorentina, all in with a realistic chance of finishing first.

A few weeks ago Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon claimed that Milan are the favourites for the Scudetto, and the recent signing of Ronaldinho, in addition to the purchases of Flamini and Zambrotta has led many to believe that he has made a good prediction.

"I said it at the end of last season,” Buffon told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“They are not in the Champions League and so they will be able to concentrate completely on the championship. They have the advantage.”

Buffon was then asked if Juventus had a chance of winning the championship.

“I answer like this. For a team like Juve, if they do not win the Scudetto, it means that they could always do better," he explained.

Finally, the world’s best shot-stopper, who has already won four Scudetti (two revoked) was quizzed about which trophies he would still like to pick up before the end of his career.

"I do not want to be greedy,” smiled the 30-year-old.

“However I would like to win a little more. Things like the European Championship, the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup and the European Supercup.

“The Uefa Cup and the Italian Cup I already won at Parma.”

Spezia, they were one of the oldest clubs in Italy : founded in 1906, they won one scudetto, in 1944.

'Paranoid' Mou infuriates fans
Jose Mourinho was jeered by Inter fans after locking them out of a training session to “avoid scouts from opposition clubs." (Ch. 4)

Nice. He probably also sleeps with a gun under his pillow in order to ward off the Tooth Fairy. Is there anything he won't do to put himself in the spotlight?

Surely, if anything, shunning away the public is avoiding the spotlight?

While we all know exactly how Milan will play next season because Galliani and Carlo have been blabbing, and Juve and Roma never changing the way they play, its a huge advantage for Inter to start the season with no one knowing how to deal with them. And you'll see that small details like this result in big differences in league tables come May.

changing an accepted team practice and causing a great deal of controversy and uproar from the fans sounds like getting in the spotlight to me... and why was he so worried that someone might find out the tactics he was going to use for the friendly the next day against some shit team...

Clubs await 2008-09 calendar

Friday 25 July, 2008

The Serie A fixture list for 2008-09 will be drawn up later today and there will be no seeding measures to prevent epic encounters on the opening day.

After their first few weeks of pre-season training, teams across the peninsula are anxiously awaiting their schedule for the coming season. And Italy is following the English model whereby the calendar will be completely random, allowing games such as Milan-Inter or Lazio-Roma to fall on the first day of the season.

However, no derby will be allowed to fall on one of the three Wednesday rounds at the request of TV companies and the Osservatorio, who try to prevent problems with law and order at football games. With Italy facing Argentina in a rugby match on November 15 in Turin, Juventus or Torino will play on the Friday. There are also complications posed by popular singer Vasco Rossi’s tour of the peninsula. When Rossi is in Udine, Bologna and Florence, the local teams will play away from home.

The 2008-09 campaign will start on Saturday August 30 and conclude on May 31, 2009. Serie B’s fixtures will also be revealed today and the teams in the Second Division are still waiting for an agreement over TV rights.

The draw will commence at around 4.30pm.

-----------

I'd personally prefer it if they didnt have the big games too early on
