Ask any player from the old days, they all say football is played in a much higher tempo now. I've heard a lot of ex-footballers who were considered good to great in their days, that they wouldn't be able to cope with today's tempo in football. Watch a high calibre game from 30-40 years back, compared to nowadays game, it looks like they're playing at walking speed.

If the game has changed in tempo from the last 10-15 years, it's harder to say than over a period of 30-40 years but i'm inclined to say yes. Talented ball players like say Isco/Sneijder etc, can't rely on talent only and disregard the dirty work nowadays, cause it will be punished. The trend is that football is getting faster, and getting harder for lazy 'magicians'. Whether you like that/think it's better football is up to you.

Ofcourse there is conjuncture of great/less great defenders, but it doesn't countervail the evolvement of football itself. Maybe because football is played in such a high tempo, it's harder for defenses to keep that image of WC defender going. I mean from Thiago Silva to Kompany, all of them have been schooled at least once, for me that's more (read; more, not all of it) down to the attacking prowess of the opposition than the inability of the defense.

In 10-20 years, football is going to have a lot of super-athletes a lá Yaya Toure and less lazy ball magicians like Dinho. When you look at this development in football, for me it makes Messi (with a not so impressive physique) as a player that much more impressive.

Read somewhere that in the 1970 WC players would run 5-6 km per game. In 2014, it was 10-12 km.

That's how far the physical aspect of the game has gone. You need a whole different skillset and maybe even body nowadays.

The space and time in the game has changed completely.

Of course the player with skills is still better than one without it. But can he use that skill while playing 60 games a season, running 11 km in game, with very little time and space, etc.

Messi is strong in his own way. He's fast and he has some unreal balance along whit ball control... You just can't beat him away from the ball. There's still space for little dribblers in football as long as they're fast

Why do people always overestimate previous generations when comparing them to the current? Or perhaps it's vice versa...

this.

you forget bad games and rmeember specific moments. Or maybe you didn't watch week in week out

Exactly what i was saying

People forget that players back in the day had bad games too. Only the good displays remain ethced in the memory.

I used to glorify the past figures over present ones in several cases. Truth is, each day I'm more and more convinced that you can't declare one is better than the other simply because the eras they played in were different. We can talk about them being the most dominant in their time, but its really difficult to end up assessing who is the absolute best. All generations have had to face particular situations (for better and worse).

The thing here is, the ones glorifying the past, in 2030 are likely to be saying Cristiano, and Messi used to face REAL opposition, and will group in today's best defenders with the list of defenders from 80-00's to prove how defenses in 2030 are not as good as they used to be. All to discredit the current generation of top footballers, when what you should do is, realize you're watching history be made.

Let's get real, Messi and Cristiano are so good, people actually are waiting for them to have a bad game (in the exceptional times it happens) so that they can crawl out and say they suck, extremely subjective stuff like "important game" is thrown out when they lose or have an off day, they're simply not allow to have a mistake, cause it'll be used against them.

I just dunno, I wasn't all on Messi and CRon a few years back, no denying that, but there comes a point where you can't really keep arguing they're not greats, they keep proving you wrong so wrong, and they're under 30 still. They're like John Cena, they can't be stopped...they wont.be.stopped.

Yeah whatever bro's
Call me when Messi can force his way through the middle of a team from his own half
Call me when CR can still floor defenders with no speed and 30 lbs overweight...just dribbling skills
Call me when either of them lose their pace and the full use of their stronger shooting foot.

etc etc :o

I prefer the Sheva - Zidane - Batigol generation and I know there's better players today. But it's not about who is better. It's about my preference, memories and the football I grew up watching.

I do think the era(s) of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Zidane were much more inspiring than the current lot. Messi might be the better player, but he'll never have the appeal or charisma of Ronaldinho. Likewise with the two Ronaldo's.

Also as we get older we (usually) get smarter and so analyse things a lot more. If Michael Owen scored that goal vs Argentina in the 2014 world cup I guarantee the reactions would be " at that defending".

Something you might like Congo

El Classico top goalscorers (in all competitions):
1. Messi - 21
4. Cristiano Ronaldo - 14
17. Karim Benzema - 7

I can't find any stats on fat Ronaldo because every result of a "Ronaldo in El Classico" search is about Cristiano

EDIT: Checked from the list of El Classico matches, he's got 6

Benzema has to be better than Ronaldo then:lol: just like Rebrov and Litmanen in the CL:lol::lol::lol:

seriously you should just stop posting. your posts are getting stupider and stupider.

Messi+CR7 are all time greats, but the are not as good as Ronaldo. Ronaldo in his prime was the perfect footballer. deal with it

How many CL goals did Ronaldo score?

Or was football an all out defence game where 1 goal is equal to 15 goals today...

Ronaldo's mix of speed, power, skill, brains, knowledge of the game and grace is something that can't be matched by either Cristiano or Messi.

And then you get these:

He's basically fat Ronaldo with Totti passing, all with less fat and more efficiency.

Which makes it even sadder for fat Ronaldo. Messi is basically shitting on the game of football doing only the basics.

He's the equivalent of spamming the most broken move in Mortal Kombat.

Scoring goals in Champions League-wise, Rebrov has fat Ronaldo beat.

But wiping the floor-wise, fat Ronaldo has the grace of an Olympic figure skater, so he easily beats Rebrov.

47 goals in 49 games for farca yet they dint win the league looool that year. #greatest. #strongdefenses. In international competitions, he is the greatest without a doubt but just not in club football. Excuses like injuries, getting fat, partying etc, losing motivation, lost interest, dint play for the record, dint want to be the best etc doesnt really help his cause tbh. If you want to be the best, you need to adhere to strict principles like cr7 for example. He doesnt even drink iirc, that shows you how dedicated he is. His aim is to be the best player in the world and clearly his work ethic, natural ability and physical ability helped him get there. Talent wise r9 destroys them all, but in club football no one comes close to messi and cr7 imo. Talent alone doesnt make you a better player, otherwise robinho would have been as good as pele. Weak defenses or not, messi and cr7 have put up incredible numbers in a very attack minded era. So to be able to stand out despite the depth in the attacking department of modern times is a testament to how great these two really are.
Sheva was incredible in big games but even he dint put up ridiculous numbers like the aforementioned duo. Btw its not like cr7 only performed such incredible feats for madrid. The season before he joined real madrid, he scored an astonishing 47 goals in 43 games for man.utd. btw during that year there were 3 english teams in the semi finals which implies that epl was the strongest league at the time.

Ok so it's pure trolling now so I'm out.
People use whatever argument suits their points/agendas

People are laughing at Madridsta when he talked about the grace of R9's moves, even though Zidane himself commented that Ronaldo was always coming up with something new and beautiful. It is this creativity that R9 was able to combine with the rest oh his talents to not only perform but amaze.

He has inspired at least two generations of footballers including Messi himself. He did it at a time when those that stood in his way were legends themselves. Everyone is entitled to his opinion, but seeing a man return from the suspicions of not being able to walk to winning football's biggest tournament is what inspires me.

Regards,
dru

People often make this example about Robinho when they are evaluating the talent 'dilemma'. It depends on what you consider the definition of talented to be. If its technically talented, then yeah. But Robinho didnt have the pace, strength, shooting ability, and he was very weak on the mental side in terms of in-game determination, play efficiency, focus, mental fortitude. This is also 'talent', and Ronaldo had all this in addition to everything else. As a pure footballer, there is literally nothing Ronaldo has less than CR7 or Messi. And you can laugh all you want but things like variety, originality, creativity, simply means more dimension of the player, for me its what sets him apart. not bloated stats.
