Is this trolling? What does 4 goals in 1 match mean? Put that in context. Was It CL final? Was that a SF? Was that against Arsenal?

I know one thing. Maradona would not bother to score 4 goals against that Arsenal if the Great Man was playing for a strong Barca side. He would let others score. Maradona said similar things in an interview. He said that he scored more goals for Boca Juniors because he had too. Afterwards, he focussed on game-making.

Messi on the other hand scores 4 goals even when it does not really matter. His stats improves. His fanfare grows. So, yes, he has lot of proven hunger which will take him far. But then remember that CL final between Barca and ManU? It was Eto'o who opened the scoring with excellent dribbling of two defenders. Messi showed up very late to score an excellent header off Iniesta cross. That is where Messi is questioned. In big matches, he does not live up to the high standards.

I'm surprised pippo only has 4 derby goals, that's weak for his BGP standard.

hmmmm .....if one player plays only two full seasons in Italy and another plays seven plus a return on loan....who do you expect would score more in the derby? :monto:
I mean...if one player has 136 games more than the other...should he have more or less goals :conf:

If Maradona would have had the chance to score 4 past any opposition in champions league, he would have had (from Metallist to Real Madrid), don't delude yourself on the words of a retired player that tries to make his legend status be bigger by subtly putting down current players' achievements.

Besides that point, you have to take into account that Maradona was played as a pure 10 in Napoli for example, in a more tactically righd scheme, where no.10 did no.10 stuff mostly by serving no.9 (Careca, a very good forward). So probably Maradona of today (assuming talent + added physicality of the game do not affect him but benefit him), would have probably also found himself in conditions to score a poker in knock out rounds of the CL (which in anyway you wanna see it, even if you're using to discredit a player, its a fantastic feat in a big match, the result was ridiculous cause he made it happen).

The big game theory is the biggest BS ever created in sports. No one can really define a big game outside finals and biggest rivalry game. If the player plays wonderfully in a semifinal but sucks in the final, he's a big game choker, or someoen that only shows up in non relevant games.

The final decisive game is just as important as all the other games that got you to where you are. You wouldn't be playing a decisive game if you wouldn't have performed in the past games. If Messi doesn't score those 4 goals vs Arsenal, and say no one in Barca is capable of scoring goals, and Arsenal takes a fluke goal, you'd be using that Arsenal match as a proof that Messi did not show up at a dumb QF CL game, where Barca gets eliminated, during their most dominant era. But because Messi scored 4, you decided it wasn't a big game.

I agree with these concepts.
However it is also true that the players that shine in the most high profile matches are the most remembered/respected. Sheva and Pippo were the ultimate BGP's for this and rightly so. The flip side is also true which is why almost nobody rates England these days because they'll smash 6 or 7 vs the Faroe Islands and then lose vs any decent team

Also Ronaldo isn't the only player who wasn't overly consumed by ambition. Cassano is another super talented player who was more concrened with expressing himself on the pitch than actually achieving anything of note. I would say that guys like Ron and ZZ had more ambition than him but nowhere close to what CR7 has. In this context, Maradonna's words are believable

There were times that they actually asked Brazil to keep their score lines down so as to not humiliate their opponents (in friendlies for instance). I even remember once seeing Ron beat the entire team with the goal at his mercy...only to turn around and try a new way to score.

I think cassano was more concerned with expressing himself off the pitch

I personally think Cassano lacked grace on the field and cannot be compared with the greats of yesteryear

What is the point of these discussions?

Arguing who is better out of Ronaldo, Sheva, and Inzaghi without including Diego Costa is like arguing who is the best golfer without including Tiger Woods.

Lol ok. Diego costa is a great striker. But he hasnt played in the toughest league yet, as in serie a. So i still have my doubts whether he is truly the best atm.

There is a concept for Big Game and Big Game Player.
As you said, a big game is a game played between two established rivals or a game in the SF, F of big tournaments (Euro, WC, CL ec). A big game may as well be a QF of a big tournament if two favourites are meeting each other early in a QF.

After this definition are done, Messi is a good player but he shines more in easier matches than in difficult matches. You can contrast that with Maradona or Zidane. They are not traditional goal scorers or strikers but give them a WC or CL, and they start scoring in the big games, when their strikers did not score at all.

Zidane did this in 1998 WC and was close to doing this in 2006 WC. Zidane also did this in CL final.

Maradona did this in 1986 WC and was close to winning the WC in 1990 despite 4 of his first team lineup were suspended/ unavailable in the final. Consider Maradona's pass to Caniggia against Brazil in 1990 - that is a big game player showing his class when it mattered even if he was a shadow of himself. Maradona's games against Juventus and Milan in Serie-a also show that he was effective vs the strongest teams of strongest league of that time with strongest defenders.

And finally you are right. Maradona was a well defined #10. Ronaldo was a well defined #9. Since Messi is a hybrid more leaning more towards a scoring CF and CR7 is leaning more towards a scoring Winger, Maradona, Zidane and Ronaldo cannot be compared to Messi, CR7 in any logical way. Football has changed.;)

luis nazario de lima ronaldo - Best ever of those i have watched. Followed by messi and zidane.

Just watch lazio vs inter. (Nesta vs ronaldo). He destroyed nesta, and lazio had such an amazing team that time. They actually had the likes of nesta, sebastian veron, nedved, crespo and even stam.

Without being biased,i think sheva destroys them both. Lewandowski is next and then costa. Costa still has a lot to prove but he is on the right track. Lewa is a beast. Only great players can single handedly destroy a real madrid side that boasts the likes of cr7, benzema and di maria etc. Lewa freaking scored 4 against real not too long ago. Dont forget his goals against bayern when they had goetze.

This is very interesting, is not it?

Messi scored 4 against Arsenal.
Lewa scored 4 against Real Madrid.

Stats can be awe-inspiring sometimes.

Zidane was the most elegant/graceful player ever.

It would be interesting to compare Messi/CR7 stats in big games compared to Ronaldo/Maradona stats in big games. I'm sure they are more or less the same. But Messi/CR7 are such a myth not because of their big game stats, but the fact that they have 40-50 goals per season. Which, surprise surprise, most of comes in blowouts against weak teams where they score 3-4 goals easily.

In Messi's case, people forget that its the team and the system that makes him so good, because in that style, with those teammates, and in that role, a player with qualities like him will rule the world. Its his stats with Argentina that give a more realistic picture, and it would be even more realistic if he would try himself someplace else. Its similar to Cristiano, although he has proven himself for Manchester, you can see how a lesser quality hampers him for Portugal. Hes just not the same player. Well, he is, its just the stats that are not the same. Thats what I'm saying. For R9, anywhere he went, he played the same, and had the same excellent output.

No fan of either Messi or CR7. But they're already the best players since Maradona at least.

Credit where credit is due

but r9 was better than maradona.

+ maradona didnt have longevity.so according to senatore is worst than cr7 :lol::lol::fp::fp::fp::fp::fp::fp::fp:

PS i bet only 1-2 members here have seen inter play in 97-2000 era.otherwise they wouldnt compare at all...

Something you might like Congo

El Classico top goalscorers (in all competitions):
1. Messi - 21
4. Cristiano Ronaldo - 14
17. Karim Benzema - 7

I can't find any stats on fat Ronaldo because every result of a "Ronaldo in El Classico" search is about Cristiano

EDIT: Checked from the list of El Classico matches, he's got 6

what's next on your list??comparing water polo scores with nba scores?

Ronaldo's mix of speed, power, skill, brains, knowledge of the game and grace is something that can't be matched by either Cristiano or Messi.

messi may be very close with greats like r9 zizou maradona pele romario.but spelling cr7 name next to them(let alone comparing him) is a shame.

we have to admit though that cr7 is the footballer that has the most professionalism than any other (maybe pele comes close)
