Why is Hugo Sanchez not the greatest player eva?

Or even Zarra?

Hey 15+ yrs longevity/consistency.

I guess coz no UCL? Damn it...

Hey in that case Di Stefano is for sure GOAT? If not, why not?

I'm confused...

Di Stefano is a contender for GOAT even if GOAT does not mean much to anyone in the world. If Messi or CR7 won 5 consecutive CL titles, where would they be placed? Di Stefano had been there and done that!!!!

And from the video that I saw, his playing style was way ahead of his era. He really controlled and conducted the game on the field!!

lol "bloated stats"

Very good Congo Powers 10/10

It's laughable to think that modern football is geared towards more goalscoring

Maradonna had a 0.432 goals/game average in Europe
Rooney had more goals AND a better average 0.46

Rooney>>>Maradonna

Hazard/Fabregas (Barca) has 0.3 goals /game
Zidane/Figo has 0.2

Hazard /Fabregas>>>>>Zidane/Figo

Why weren't the stars of the previous generations producing the numbers that the stars of this generation are getting today?? Well it's OBVIOUSLY that players today >>>>> players yesterday

Stats today not bloated at all :proud:

Maldini - 0 World Cups 0 Euro Cups
Gerrard Pique - World Cup & Euro Cup winner

Pique>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Maldini

People often make this example about Robinho when they are evaluating the talent 'dilemma'. It depends on what you consider the definition of talented to be. If its technically talented, then yeah. But Robinho didnt have the pace, strength, shooting ability, and he was very weak on the mental side in terms of in-game determination, play efficiency, focus, mental fortitude. This is also 'talent', and Ronaldo had all this in addition to everything else. As a pure footballer, there is literally nothing Ronaldo has less than CR7 or Messi. And you can laugh all you want but things like variety, originality, creativity, simply means more dimension of the player, for me its what sets him apart. not bloated stats.

fair enough. Well i find messi to be the greater player. What makes him more impressive than r9 is his ability to fend off challenges despite his diminutive stature. His agility and close control abilities are simply ethereal, his playmaking abilities can be compared to iniesta. He is ruthless in front of goal. its like witnessing iniesta, ribery and etoo being fused together to form a GOD in the form of messi.

Why do you mention Liverpool and Shalke players ahead of Nesta ?
Do you prefer Booba to our legendary players?

appreciate the manner of the reply. I guess it comes down to personal preference in what you want in a forward. Messi is a superior passer to Ronaldo thats for sure, a better playmaker. Cristiano is a better freekick taker and much more capable of scoring headers, which is important skill for a striker. They all have their pros and cons, I just think that Ronaldo's combination was the closest there is to the perfectly balanced skillset. And that includes the aesthetic part at least for me - I know its subjective and everything, but there is a reason why between two players with similar statistics, one is considered to be better. I'm not talking about the Denilsons and Robinhos who don't have the output, no substance just sizzle, Im talking about those who combine effectiveness with entertainment to the highest degree, like Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, and today Messi and Cristiano.

I do think the era(s) of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Zidane were much more inspiring than the current lot. Messi might be the better player, but he'll never have the appeal or charisma of Ronaldinho. Likewise with the two Ronaldo's.

Also as we get older we (usually) get smarter and so analyse things a lot more. If Michael Owen scored that goal vs Argentina in the 2014 world cup I guarantee the reactions would be " at that defending".

i call bs. (Tho your second sentence hit's it somewhat on the head)

i think it's all about access. If we had twitter and 24-7 internet news cycle you'd be sick of overexposure to them.

If people are annoyed by cristiano dressing gaudy and generally living like a saint (seriously, is there a more professional guy? He works his ass off)... I can ONLY imagine if Ronaldo, Zidane and others played in TMZ era of media access...

Dinho's tail end at barca was this but seriously it doesn't touch type of stuff you see 2011 on....He would be all over twitter or wherever daily w/ 'gotcha' pics of him in clubs.

The access dictates. Like even 10 years ago, i highly doubt you had the ability to watch EVERY Luiz Ronaldo game or record them if you missed. Today, I can watch 65 cristiano ronaldo games live and if not, i have a DVR. This stuff matters in shaping perspective.

The truth if you're all sheep.

LMAO

i love when LEaf/madridista sorts to these arguments.

It's the clear I've lost the argument and i'm grasping at straws which don't matter.

It's cool to say "I like ronaldo more. etc. etc." but objectively, it's impossible to claim his career is > messi's. Which by the way isnt an insult. Messi's career isgoing to end as possibly most successful of all time.

that is true. cr7 and messi can be too robotic at times. R9 and ronaldinho in particular are probably the greatest players ever if you factor in the combination of effectiveness with an aesthetic element. Its a very subjective topic really. i rated ronaldinho above pretty much everyone in those two years where he obliterated every team that was put in front of him. But unfortunately i cannot say he is better than messi in his prime cause the latter has sustained his peak form for a significantly longer period. He played against powerful EPL sides who are on the rise since 06. Some of the greatest english sides have been created in the modern era and messi has managed to subdue them in important games on a consistent basis.

NOBODY ever said this.

What we are saying is that at their Absolute Peaks....Ronaldo was better than Messi. Who was the better player and who had the better career are two separate arguments.

In a hypothetical situation where you had any player from any era to pick from I'd pick Ronaldo because I view him as the most unstoppable player I've ever seen.

Whose career was better among that of Garrincha, Cruyff, Di Stefano? Compare Messi's career so far with theirs at similar stages and discuss how far Messi could go. 20 Marks.

Is this trolling? What does 4 goals in 1 match mean? Put that in context. Was It CL final? Was that a SF? Was that against Arsenal?

I know one thing. Maradona would not bother to score 4 goals against that Arsenal if the Great Man was playing for a strong Barca side. He would let others score. Maradona said similar things in an interview. He said that he scored more goals for Boca Juniors because he had too. Afterwards, he focussed on game-making.

Messi on the other hand scores 4 goals even when it does not really matter. His stats improves. His fanfare grows. So, yes, he has lot of proven hunger which will take him far. But then remember that CL final between Barca and ManU? It was Eto'o who opened the scoring with excellent dribbling of two defenders. Messi showed up very late to score an excellent header off Iniesta cross. That is where Messi is questioned. In big matches, he does not live up to the high standards.
