Thing is Serie A changed since 97. Decreased specially the presence of star/impact players (that thing that - I think - make line-ups sound powerful).

It's not only Milan (we're probably the last one's to feel it). One look at the line-ups of all Serie A teams in 97 and now, every team look worse nowadays.

Serie A is very, very short of top/proven players now. Ibra and Thiago leaving was just the last of many.

its sad and true

Nottingham-born Herbert Kilpin's legacy lives on at Italian giants AC Milan ...

It is an unmistakably Italian scene. From the setting to the architecture to the names all around, this is Italy.

But in gallery XV of Milan’s vast and magnificent Cimitero Monumentale, there hangs a solitary red, white and black scarf that conceals a tomb that is forever England.

Here, amid names such as Oliveri, Mameli, Pizzi, Ferrari and Coppa, in grave 162, lie the remains of one Herbert Kilpin.

Kilpin, the son of a Nottingham butcher, may be little known in his native land but in Milan and beyond, Kilpin has a claim on the title: ‘Father of Italian football’.

It is some claim.

But then as Kilpin was one of six men who founded the Milan Cricket and Football Club in 1899, and who won three league titles with them, he was a pioneer.

It is said that Kilpin also designed the famous red and black stripes of Milan.
We are a team of devils. Our colours are red as fire, and black, to invoke fear in our opponents,’ is how he is alleged to have come to the colour scheme.

It is also said Kilpin liked a drink. Whatever the exact origins, the Rossoneri were born and on the tribute at Kilpin’s grave it describes him among other things as ‘Rossonero L’Eternita’.

He had first arrived in Italy in Turin, where he founded Internazionale Torino, believed to be the first Italian club. That was in 1891.

Kilpin had moved from Nottingham because he worked in the lace industry and the connections with Italy were growing. Six years later he moved again, to Milan, and along with industrialist Alfred Edwards, formed another club.

Tribute: Herbert Kilpin's tombstone

It was not Milano, as the city is called in Italian, but Milan, and even though the name was changed in 1946 to Associazione Calcio Milan — hence AC — Milano was never adopted.

There is also a St George’s Cross on the Milan badge, though that is said to be part of the city livery rather than Kilpin’s doing. Without Milan Cricket and Football Club there would be no Inter Milan.

In 1908, after a row about foreign players, Internazionale were formed as a breakaway and one of the great European city derbies was under way. Kilpin was 38 by then and within eight years was dead.

He was buried in Milan but his grave was lost and his name faded until a local historian started a campaign to find it in the 1990s.

From there he was moved to the Cimitero Monumentale. Kilpin’s is not an extravagant tomb, but that you can still find Kilpin T-shirts on sale outside the San Siro on matchdays indicates that the Milanistas have not forgotten their English heritage.
