I doubt it; we need someone-not just one person-to be in charge of the passing. De Jong is best at retrieving the ball, we need him for that especially as Abate can only give the ball to an opponent.
It's not the case that I don't appreciate his work as someone else suggested. It is that he is better, way better at some other aspect of the game. I reckon when he have Honda as rumored and some other passers, De Jong will return to ball getting.

De Jong isn't alone in charge of passing.
Montolivo made just as many passes on average - yesterday 61 x 62 and same numbers overall in Serie A.

De Jong just gets the ball deeper, and need to play a safest passes.

I remember in 2010 looking at Nederlands Van Bommel - De Jong partnership and thinking damn these guys must have a screw loose

Why didn't we sign them sooner? A pleasure to have both players represent us on the pitch - fantastic.

Happy Birthday NDJ :star:

happy BD

i wish you weren't 29 already dayum

by our previous standards...this is young, though we shouldn't be complacent and not find younger players to eventually take on this role of his. with that said, cristante should really be given a chance or two....maybe if we start winning some more matches and the pressure eases off the team, then we'll see more of cristante.

and a very happy birthday to mr. de jong. awesome player

There's like Rami-Mexes duo, Muntari-de Jong-Robinho trio, Niang-Constant duo and Birsa-Urby duo.

Very intresting read. De Jong is a total beast this season, even though he's played in the wrong position/system. He needs a creative passer right next to him, much like Gatusso used to have.

Montolivo needs to drop deeper and instead of Muntari we need a ball playing CM, which could be either Honda, Kaka or a new signing. With our current squad the best option is this:

---------Kaka-----------
--Honda------------------
-------------Montolivo-----
----de Jong----------------

Love him.

But he's not the midfielder we need and we're not the EPL/BL team he needs.

Should be sold next summer.

You want him sold assuming we purchase someone better. Frankly, the amount better, more complete midfielders than De Jong is slim, with those individuals fitting such a category certainly not going for cheap, nor are they on contracts expiring this summer.

It would be sweet if we got someone like Matic, thus allowing him to partner, or make a midfield 3 of De Jong/Montolivo. Will we get someone like him? I don't see it. We'll get Parolo, a solid player, but certainly not a world beater by any stretch of the imagination. Selling De Jong would be like entering a marathon with only one foot. May be managed, but is doomed to failure from the get go.
