Muntari played as CM last year, De Jong plays as a DM and he will replace Ambrosini. That De Jong played like a beast (aka great) last year is an exaggeration.... he had good games, but he also had poor games.

Nobody can deny that. However, even despite those awful games he had; at least he recovered the ball many times plus he is better passer than Muntari is. (more consistent at least)

Nigel is working for himself all the time, and was in Milanello days before everyone. Hopefully he is 100% fit till the games start. Then he is a great DM, practically a sweeper in front of the defence. He had some great games when he was fit. And back then the team was 100% shit also.

NdJ isn't good enough in possession to be left alone in front of the defence, but his defensive quality is wasted if he's used anywhere else. Double pivot is the simplest solution.

Not only that, it could be the strongest part of Milan's team. Need them to win and recycle the ball high up the pitch while the team presses? They can do that. Need them to brain smartly in front of the defence while the team sits deep? They can do that.

Solid basis for a variety of systems. What else do you want?

I think they'll operate as a double pivot even if the formation is called a diamond. People probably won't notice unless someone shouts "IT'S 4-2-3-1!!!!" at them.
