It is quite clear that it is not only possible, but also prudent to have a first team squad of little/no more than 24-26 players.
Let us take a look at the list of players that are in contention for a spot in AC Milan's squad next season.
Yes, that's 39 players! Before we even think of buying someone, we have to sell/loan/not extend 14 players if we want to cut down the size of our squad to 25. If we want to buy say, two new players, the number of players to leave has to go up a further two to 16!
I understand very well that nothing even remotely close to this will be carried out this summer. But to be a financially responsible and competitive club, this is the enormity of the task at hand. It will not happen in one transfer window or even two. Especially without the CL money next season, we will have to tolerate at least another couple of seasons of fodder players in the squad before we can be really serious about challenging in Italy or Europe. Even two years is extremely optimistic.
