They are not different situations--we're talking about an elbow to the head which has been a red card for long before VAR came along--we just find new ways to compartmentalize what context we get to bring up to rationalize why Argentina or England get away with things, while we take the same behavior and chastise players from less fashionable countries and say that "they lost their heads" or "what a mistake" etc.

He’s talented for sure, and for 40m there’s hard to find a player as talented as him IMO.

To follow this up... It's almost pointless, but more so subjective, if you see someone as the "goat".

Era's see different iterations of the game. Therefore I could argue that Messi vrs Baresi, Nesta, or Maldini, playing by the rules and leeway afforded to players in the 80s, 90s or early 00s, doesn't perform to the levels afforded to him for saying the last 10-15 years? Similarly Ronaldo, not the fat good one.

For me the like of Gullit, Savicevic, Weah, Kaka, Robaldinho, Ronaldo, Maradona, Laudrup, Ribery, Zidane, etc, all hold more weight in a GOAT conversation, but that's me... And I'm not saying many are close to being an undisputed GOAT, but they played in era's with far more recognised GREAT players.

you know I was listening to nba ref who got popped match fixing ages ago. He said inherently an nba ref will give a favorable call to the superstar more times than not because to them it’s more likely that someone like Lebron got fouled forcing him to miss a shot rather than him simply missing a shot because lack of ability. I imagine that principle applies here as well

If we go with this context argument, then why punish Embolo for the dive? Did that not ruin the entertainment? The spectacle? The Swiss had Argentina on the ropes. But what happens instead? They use VAR to go back and award the second yellow. Why did that not ruin the spectacle?

I think yellows for dives, particularly in the age of VAR, are stupid and simply provide an avenue for corruption, but that's an aside--and a position I'm pretty firm on, but again, that's beside the point.

Do we think that second yellow comes for an Argentine or English or French player? If the answer is no, then we have to ask ourselves, what's the point of competing then?

These less fashionable nations are supposed to feel better because they gave a big team a run for their money, rather than feel cheated--that's their consolation prize apparently. "Aw, good job, you gave them a scare! Enjoy the new followers Vozinha!" What if Cape Verde went to the final and won? What if Norway gets the call against England and then in the semis just kept spamming crosses to Haaland so he can dunk on Argentina and Norway wins it all?

When English defenders give up penalties (the sort of thing VAR is supposed to guard against) and red card offenses against Ghana, it's nothing. Nope! Sorry. Ghana should have done better, silly Africans, don't be so naive--that is what is said to them. But to punish Argentina? England? No, we can't do that. Why not?

The reality is that Argentina or England (or anyone in that grouping) are never going to be screwed by the refs against Ghana or Switzerland, I'm just glad that we're at a point where we can all admit that the hypocrisy is built into the system.

Not really relevant but when both Digne and Rabiot were given yellow cards in the first half the coach replaced Rabiot that was playing well and not Digne who's probably their weakest starter. Down 0-1, I expected Theo to come in to provide more offense.

Some of these coaches, included Tuchel, made some odd decisions that cost them the win. Today I learned on MilanNews that De la Fuentes of Spain was offered the Milan job to replace Pioli but he refused.

I wonder how he would have done considering that there are big differences between coaching a national squad every few months to more than once a week at times.
