I think too many people confuse dribbling and trickery.

As far as I'm concerned Messi and Iniesta are by far the two best dribblers in world BECAUSE of their control. Control is most important aspect of dribbling

granted my exposure to great dribblers is limited compared to many of the posters here

but of the world cups...olympics games...CL games and few years of serie a and EPL games i've watched...i'd put messi as the best dribbler i've seen

As I said before, Messi is a great player with the best control of the ball at fast speed that I have seen. He does not dribble, he pass defenders with his speed. If you people call that dribbling, then Theo Walcott must be the best dribbler of all time.

where is the ball as he is passing all these defenders :conf:

if the ball is at his feet while he is moving, then he is considered to be dribbling. well, at least that's how i learned the game

i seriously can't believe anyone would have audacity to say messi isn't the worlds best dribbler, much less top 5 or so dribblers of all time.

I mean seriously, I'm 27.... I'll define my football watching era as mid90s on. And only guy i'd consider on par or possibly better dribbler than messi is Luiz Ronaldo.

This is a joke, seriously.... guy's control is amazing

I'm also 27, and agree on all accounts. Messi hands down best. Ball is stuck to his foot.

it's ridiculous isn't it? First thing i ever noticed about him, when he was like 18....i was like HOW can he do this?

Honestly, i think cristiano ronaldo is a ridiculously good technical player and what he does week in week out is about as impressive as anything i've seen.... but compared to messi, he just looks sloppy. Like he doesn't even get disposessed compared to Ron

I think the problem with people not noticing Messi's dribbling skills is a lot based the fact that his ball control is that good and that fast it doesn't even seem like his dribbling past a defender at times...either that or there's a confusion between dribblings and stepovers/tricks being the only dribblings possible.

dribbling and close control are two different things

Messi probably has the best close control in the world, Ronaldo is probably the best dribbler.

Dribbling : when a player runs with the ball at their feet under close control, especially when this successfully outmanoeuvres one or more opponents in close proximity without losing possession.

Thank you!

but where I come from close control and dribbling

Have two different meanings, for instance.

This would be what I call close control.

This would be what I classify as dribbling

Dribbling to me en composes the tricks(especially when the ball is dead)
Where Iam from when you play like this, your classified as a "dribbler"

while close control is more something that is merely being able to change direction at pace while maintaing possesion.

Hope that makes sense!

We always say brazilians are the masters of dribbling, but argentines are the gods of close control.

Your views are very confusing. You can't dribble with a dead ball. Dead ball means that the ball is not moving and are mostly mentioned in dead ball situations, which are free kicks, penalties and corners.

That guy was great, but why are you discussing dribbling in a threat were the player cant even dribble anymore?

I think Pato is probably the only player i ever watched who lost it.I mean he had it when he came here, but not he just looks clumsy every time he tries to dribble past anyone.
