Jube need to ditch the 4-4-2 or else they wont make it far. .perhaps 4-2-3-1? . . .they should get spalleti if they fire Del Neri

The season just started, they're not going to fire Del Neri. Give him time.

Round 1 goes to Germany over Italy, Leverkussen, Dortmund and Stuttgart all won while all the Italian teams drew.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

- Sampdoria couldn't keep possession for more than 5 seconds against PSV Eindhoven (number three in Dutch competition last year). The draw was totally undeserved. If PSV was a bit sharper in front of goal Sampdoria could have lost by a margin of two or three goals.

- Juventus can't even win at home playing Lech Poznan ffs.

- Napoli having trouble coping with FC Utrecht. Seriously even in the Dutch league FC Utrecht doesn't mean anything.

- And finally Sparta Prague away... Always difficult...

Germans are taking over. Serie A still has more big players, but most teams are becoming a joke in Europe.

I don't know, maybe it's more related to the strategy of Italian teams. I noticed that all Italian teams have serious trouble keeping ball possession in Europe. Also while Italian teams were once known for their tight defences, nowadays they give away far too many chances.

I personally think that the Italian teams with their defensive strategies give the opponent too much opportunity and space to play. Their strategies might work in the Italian League but Europe is different. Italian teams still have a far to static approach while strategies in foreign leagues are becoming more centered on constant movement and creation. Teams from other leagues have a more "active" approach while the approach of Italian teams can be labelled "reactive" or "passive".

I watched PSV-Sampdoria and Sampdoria didn't press PSV at all. And when Sampdoria had the ball they lost the ball very easily because their was no movement of any player in their team. The positioning game of PSV was much better and on top of that PSV was allowed to play very deep into the half of Sampdoria. In modern football based on pace, strength and stamina it is not realistic anymore to just retreat at your own half and expect to win on the counter. Because in modern football the attacking team will ALWAYS get chances to score.

BTW: Last season Inter was an exception.

No.

If you looking deep into their squad, even teams like sampdo n palermo have fucking very good depth, you even would be surprised.

No way on paper they're inferior against teams like Sevilla, freaking Stutgart, or eredivisie teams.

If they not give a shit bout EL, what else.

No offense but I am afraid that the squad depth of teams like Sampdoria and Palermo is a bit overated. The results of Italian teams in Europa League speak for itself. This is happening for several years now. In the 90's Italian teams were superiour in the UEFA Cup, so it's not about attitude. Also as far as I know Juventus and Sampdoria didn't use B-teams in their Europa League games. And I also believe b.t.w. that FC Twente and PSV have a squad that is at least equal to teams like Sampdoria and Palermo. Palombo is one of the better players in Sampdoria's team, but PSV also has a few players that are at least equal to him. The difference is not really that great between the top-level teams of the Eredivisie and the numbers 4-8 in the Serie A.

The reason for the bad results of Italian teams in Europe is that the philosophy behind the strategies of Italian teams are outdated. 15 years ago football was a much more static game. In this climate the tactics of Italian teams worked.

Nowadays football has changed, but the Italian teams still live in the past and have not learned how to cope with the greater dynamics of the modern game.

I'm a great fan of Italian football so I'm not saying this to insult you. I have great memories of the Italian League in the 90's. I hope Serie A can return to these heights. But for that to happen Italian football must find answers to current challenges.

Their (sampdo) depth in midfield is good, Dessena, Poli, Palombo, Tissone, on paper these player is far from bad. their wings is well covered too.
They just not have decent subs for cassano n their defense is ewww, but hey we talking about Sampdoria here...

Palermo have very nice looking Squad-18 too, so on paper their squad strong enough for this arena.
But God knows why Serie A teams is underachieved on this tournament, I don't buy squad strength or tactic is the problem, because Serie A is one of the most tactical league in the world, why the hell their tactic is inferior for teams from other league.

I can't deny your point tho, but at least Mentality indeed one of the major problems for Italians participant in EL.
