Nothing in Milan's midfield is ideal. I just think it sounds silly to say we should put DJ on the bench in a 3-man midfield when you have Nocerino, Muntari and Poli (who I don't think is that good, especially tactically) as his competitors.
Muntari-Montolivo-Flamini was better than any midfield-three combination including De Jong...
De Jong has more quality than most of our midfielders, but he's not suited for a 3 man midfield. That's the problem.
By "far from ideal", I mean it's hardly even appropriate. Nothing we should be okay with, other than as a desperate solution until the next mercato. Unless we have already given up the coming seasons too..
I haven't seen DJ in side CM role, and I don't think you have either, so who really knows how well he can do.
I have. We tried him there a couple of times early last season and he also tried it at City. You don't really need to see him in that role to know it's not a suitable role for him though. He's not a box-to-box player or the type of player to run around all over the pitch to win the ball back. He prefers to sit back, be the distributor at times, the ball-winner at times...
