He is Milan's best midfielder by a country mile before even stepping foot on the pitch for the team. That's how shit the others are, so be grateful that the team has him.

It's going to take a miracle and super performances from Montolivo to get the team competing. The new orchestrator and playmaker in midfield. Super excited to witness him!

well you're in for a disappointment then :D Make no mistake , he isn't exceptional , just a fairly good player. But he is also clearly our best midfielder and by some distance . So what does that say about our impending season?

Thought that was possibly best game I've seen Montolivo play.

Second most passes completed (94), 88%

Led the team in tackles (5) and interceptions (4).

Was kind of everywhere. He was definitely AM early on, but seemed to move to RCM later. Ultimately italy played a pretty fluid midfield and he took a lot of positions, and that's promising. Because we definitely want to do same with milan

Looked a clear level about every english midfielder except Gerrard who was only one who looked half-decent.

I like montolivo. I just don't like the idea he's our main midfield man. He's not that kind of guy :-/

and this as well:

Still he covered more distance than any other player

Top 3
1. Montolivo: 11662m
2. Balzaretti: 11591m
3. Pirlo: 11575m
Source: UEFA
(English players included, none of them made it to Top 3 though)

Not bad for a player who supposedly was unfit.

one important thing is he was playing second fiddle to Pirlo (and maybe even DDR). don't know how he'll do leading a team on his own.

Montolivo had an excellent performance yesterday, yes, but you can count on one hand the amount of good games he has had for his country. Montolivo still has the same problem than when he was a 19 year-old -- inconsistency. He's always had the characteristics of becoming one of the best midfielders in the world. You're kidding yourselves if you're solemnly pinning Milan's Scudetto hopes on Montolivo.

so after last night donkey face fairy was hailed here as a top 5 player in the world by the fan boyz.

montolivo had a very good game and led team in tackles and interceptions.

does this mean that montolivo is one of the best 10 players in the world?

I have the same fear that we ask too much of Montolivo and he has never been that guy to do more than what he can. Its happened with Italy where he was asked to play CAM or last couple of seasons with Viola where he was the main man of the midfield. Incredibly short sighted from galliani who is just filling up the squad with whatever he can find and not balancing out in terms of player attributes. :fp:

sign sahin and the scudetto will be in the bag, unless injury horror part 3 occurs.

even with ambro at anchor, sahin + montolivo with boateng/ibra/pato = scudetto.

totally what i said.

But lets get seriously, montolivo is definitely good enough to start in midfield for a legitimate UCL contender.

He's not good enough to lead the midfield/be it's main source of creativity/be it's best player.

An upgrade to what we have? Yup. Enough of an upgrade by himself? No

but then again, no one player was going to lift us fully. Now if only we could get De Rossi or Xabi Alonso or Essien with new knees/back/ironman suit. Then we'd be onto something ;)

The real Q, i keep going back and forth on. Do we need a creative mid or a defensive one? I can't make a decision. What I know is we don't need another one in the middle who doesn't excell at either

Creative.

Replicate Ancelotti's midfield with a 3 times poorer version. Monty (Pirlo), Flamini (Rino), new dude (Seedorf), and Boateng (Kaka).

But of course we all know Nocerino's going to start and in all probability there won't be a new midfielder anyway.

Say a pure anchor was signed, that still would leave the team with only Montolivo as a 'brain' in midfield. Depends really on who is signed. If the anchor is a good intelligent distributor it could work, but if he's a pure ball winner then a creative midfielder would be a priority, because frankly apart from Montolivo no one on the roster looks like he could take the midfield out of trouble under pressure and string two passes in midfield or pick up a forward run.

in essence, the new mid is a way less technical, maybe more athletic (or as congo puts it - futuristic) version of the old mid.

That would be a very generous way to put it. The current midfield is Montolivo and some enthusiastic runners.

Usually the midfield is where the 'brain' is at. Milan's brain is upfront and at the back now. Ibra, Cassano, and T. Silva. Even Nesta and Van Bommel are gone.

Things are looking really dim...

You know what sucks? Is that Nocerino, Muntari and co. aren't even good at winning back the ball. Muntari's an okay passer but really, in general, the midfield contribute very little positive product offensively or defensively... they just run around like maniacs while Ibra, Cassano, Boateng, and Silva do all the 'real' work.

Hopefully Montolivo will change that a bit in midfield, but one man isn't enough. There has to be at least two in the starting line-up, and even then injuries (especially in Milan's case!) and suspensions play a part. The current midfield roster is suicide.

Italy Vs Germany will be a personal derby for Riccardo Montolivo. His mum is German, he speaks fluent German, and has visited Germany many times growing up. Montolivo showed his shin guards to the press a few days ago, and they have both the Italian and German flags on them.
