They played good football with him, that is true, but Pirlo is the coach that ended Juve's 9 year scudetto streak. They were the favourite to win again alongside with Conte's merda, but they exited the scudetto race pretty early, by October-November I believe. At that time, they still had a really strong squad.

Yeah sure, but it was Pirlo's 1st proper job as coach ever. So he probably wasn't ready for the job at the beginning of the season. But to learn that fast and get the team to play nice football within a few months shows a good footballing / coaching brain. I mean it took years for Pioli to get to where he is now.

Maybe didn’t go to Saudi due to loyalty to Qatar which rigged him a World Cup :o

PSG fined him for missing training and going to Saudi mid-season to film their tourism campaign!

Moncada met with Enzo in Argentina and wined and dined him into delaying his decision for a Milan offer

This was as a scout and not a director

I think it'll be OK
I can't wait to see the synergy between Pioli and Moncada.

Honestly, if this is the approach, then we need to promote Chaka to the first team to be a backup RW.

Hookers can be pretty convincing!! The Brazilian players might not want to come to Milan!

The narrative that Maldini failed is funny. Yes, we finished 5th in the standings but we finished 4th in the Champions League. Failure in this instance is a purely subjective measure that RedBird is using to justify a decision they were going to make anyway.

Hedge funds and private equity are always going to put their people in place, they want to put as many guarantees as possible on the playing field.

I think the people here pushing for this narrative are being extremely harsh. It’s just about power and decision making. They couldn’t and wouldn’t fire Maldini when they bought the club directly after a scudetto run, there would have been riots. He used that leverage to get what he wanted, more power and decision making. Not having to go through a gazidis type.

And while I’m of the opinion that last summer wasn’t good and it’s more on management for team regression rather than Pioli, I don’t like the guys here saying like “oh of course Maldini got fired for last summer.” This issue with this thinking is that every club/director has bad windows, especially when you operate the way we do. Not every young player will hit it off here. So while Maldini Massara contributed to the team being worse off this season, they still reached their minimum objective and I fully was confident they’re get things back on track in 2023 summer.

So that’s the issue I have with the he failed get fired crew here. It’s not “cutthroat” to fire someone on the basis of a few mistakes when the whole of their body of work was very impressive. It’s reactive, impatient and stupid. The reality is Gerry didn’t want Maldini to have that much power. Still I’m not in full panic mode like some because I think Moncada getting more say isn’t a bad thing. And I think Pioli being consulted more makes sense. I think they highly highly value Moncada and it seems like Maldini may have said no to him on some things.

honest question.... knowing what we know now, would have preferred that elliott canned him last summer after he got wildly vocal, or have it happen as it did?
Impossible for elliott or Gerry to fire Maldini after the scudetto. Reaction would have been far far worse

I respect your opinion, and agree with a lot of this, I just don't get how Pioli is less culpable than Maldini for last season.

You know one would think you would be more grateful to our new lord and savior Gerry for sparing you from watching Zaniolo and/or Berardi in this team next season

I think the argument is that a cook can only cook with the ingredients that the restaurant can provide him with.
If the food comes out poorly because of the cooking, then it's on him. If the restaurant gets a poor review because the "ingredients" weren't "fresh" enough, then it's on the procurement manager (regardless of how much money the owner gave him to use).

Pioli could well be just as incompetent and in the wrong, but from all the KPIs, it seems the measurable issues mostly lie with Maldini at the moment.

Redshit are only aiming for top 4. They know Pioli can get top 4 if they keep Leao, add a decent striker, a Hakan like playmaker ( Kamada), and a decent central midfielder.

Really it would be better to try and get Nagelsmann. But that makes sense if the owner are aiming to take Milan to the next level in European football.

Didn't Pirlo do a pretty decent job at Juve? They started out not that great, but by the end of the season they were playing some good football. Are people mixing their feelings about Pirlo the person with Pirlo the coach?
did so well as a manager that he got fired in turkey

should bring him along side icardi zaniolo and biglia

I can't wait to see what incredible RW talent Moncada brings in. I refuse to believe that Maldini would have gotten either of those players.

Maldini's parting gift to me was Kamada.

I think the only reason they kept Pioli is so they don't change too much too soon.

Most of the players had close relationships with both Maldini and Pioli, so firing them both would not have gone over well.

My guess is they're willing to bet on him for a year by giving him more of a say in transfers. If he doesn't do well, then next summer it's Pioli out and De Zerbi in (who I think also wants another season with Brighton).

That's fine. At the same time you can have a competent coach and still get an even better one. Inter fired Mancini after 3 straight scudettos and got Mourinho who gave them the CL. Abramovich fired multiple competent coaches and won 2 CLs. RIght now Nagelsmann seemed a like much better coach than Pioli.

Ceaser was great and a genius but declaring himself 'dictator for life', when he really didn't need to totally sealed his death.

It's also ironic that out of the so called liberators only Brutus was genuine at heart about serving the republic, the rest of the assasinators were self-serving oligarchs who had personal motives for the betrayal of Ceasar.
Things haven't really changed 2000 years later in the modern world, people's predatory behavioral patterns are pretty much the same in politics and buisness.
Yeah, but Brutus was like a son to Caesar besides being his mother's lover. In the civil war Brutus allied with Pompeus against his mentor and was captured, Caesar forgave him and welcomed in his inner circle. I think the dictator for life thing was an honorary title but among the fierce republicans Cato was the most passionate and Cicero supported the faction.

I understand that argument, but I think it requires that one waive away horrific performances by Pioli and excuse him for things that are entirely within his control.

What KPIs? One transfer market performance?

Should we be putting our faith in a manager who needs to be put into that position in order to play the right players?
Sam I know you’re going to die on this hill against me regarding Pioli’s use of the team but I think you’re not giving any flexibility toward any room for the idea. I hate to do this to you bro but you sound VERY similar to the crowd who cried and cried about how Pioli was killing Hauge. Look how that one ended up. So for the sake of the argument bear with me and try to play devils advocate against yourself.

I know your argument is “Pioli regressed” but go back in time to June 2022. End of 3rd season with Pioli, coming off a title. We had shown growth season by season, always attacking intent, routinely playing one of the youngest teams in Europe, young players clearly growing, Pioli looked tactically interesting and flexible. Wouldn’t you argue a title winning coach deserves some more say on what players come in? Would you really have said “Pioli has to be put into a position to play certain players?”

Can’t you at least admit it’s possible, even if you disagree with it, that most of the players that came in this season just weren’t that good? In my opinion the team was objectively thinner at worst, and honestly not as high in quality either. I do not think it’s a coincidence we were right there with Napoli until the second half of the season when it was post World Cup and the team was deep in Europe.

In the same way I don’t think it would be fair to judge Maldini off one summer, I think it’s really harsh to go fully against Pioli for a season he still hit top 4 and went deep in the champions league. And I don’t think the group of players brought in last summer is worth clamoring like this over.
