Its not a question of him picking the wrong players ... but him picking a system that works best for the squad at his disposal. This squad can provide better results than they have done this season ... he just hasn't found the right formula, and the longer this search goes on, the more nervous or unsure of himself Leo seems to get.

Completely agree with this.

The same squad of players finished third (should have been second) under Ancelotti last year. Now, obviously he had Kaká, and he is a huge loss. But Leonardo has options Carlo did not.

He hasn't found the right way of playing yet. The worry is that he keeps starting games exactly the same way. It is clearly not working, but each time he reverts to the same formula - players in the same positions (Pirlo deep, two DM's alongside him). He's not making any changes whatsoever. We've had enough games now to realise it's not working.

100% right.

But if we want the perfect formation that absolutely will be a defensive and depends only on counter attack; here Hunt have no place in this team at all.

I would like from LEO to depends on younger Players like:-

(Antonini, Bonera, Abate, Borriello, Di Gennaro, Strasser, and Zigoni)

Really I don't care of those players have no enough Experience, at least those can run, pass, defend, create chances.

Those players can perform better and execute the suitable plan, tactics and technical aspects of LEO.

The team deserves FAR more than that, actually. I can't be too hard on Leo, though, because of the horrible Bad News Bears situation Berlu has put him in.

Nice to see that Huntelaar is our latest model of ineptitude. Thanks, B&G.

You gotta love Leo, but really I think there are some better options for coach out there.

What decent coach in his right mind would to come here and work for someone who won't listen and won't spend the money needed to improve this team?

True. He has always started with the 4-3-1-2, or a variation of it, and as soon as the plot starts to fall apart, he switches into panic mode and makes changes that sees the team look even more disorganized than they were before the changes.

In addition to keeping Pirlo deep, why hasn't he tried playing Dinho on the left? I honestly don't get the point of playing Dinho central + Hunterlaar on the right, and if Clarence can do well on the left for 1-2 games, then I'm sure Dinho can as well.

Maybe he sees things I can't, but the fact remains - as you said - its not working, and this squad can do better.
What options? Abate and TS are good, but that's it. Name a midfielder. He's got the same ones only w/o Kaka, and that's terrible.
Its debatable as to how much better or worse the squad is now, when compared to last season. Carlo didn't have both Nesta and TS - IMO, the best part of the team thus far. Also, Kaka' was out injured for a considerable amount of time last term, as were Gattuso, Ambro, Pirlo and Dinho. Pato also picked up a knock or two, as did Kala ... Oh, and also Bori ...

So, in general, I think Leo has a comparable - if not better - squad than Carlo had last term, but thats just my opinion. Of course, its always difficult to keep the same focus and spirit after the departure of two great professionals in Kaka' and Paolo, but in terms of players and options, I think Leo has it slightly better.

I'm only refering to the offensive part of the team, not central defence, which is ok. I don't care who got injured or not, the players in midfield and attack are the same, except for Huntelaar, which being the type of player he is, will never construct anything. I'm talking about creativity.

IMO, selling both Kaka and Gourcouf, to relly only on Dinho, was the stupidest thing our management ever did. I was hoping Dinho will get better, but I can't see it atm.

I do believe that is not as simple as changing tactics here, as we know Leo actually wanted a different style of playing rather than Ance.. He tries to work on it but it still difficult to put the players to play the football he wanted..
It simply because ance has put such a strong basic system and style of play to the players that it is not easy to change it in such a short time, knowing that Leo is a rookie as well..
He must work on the attitude and all those mentality thing for the players as well, the team can do better if you look from the names, but don't forget that each year our players gets older and eventually many declines too.. that's the thing that Leo must face .. many of us thing that it still is the same, but ance has more options upfront, mid last season, despite the injury of kaka, borrie, last season Dinho is still pretty useful not to mention there still sheva, and if you look at last season to be fair we have a bigger and better squad than this season.. Leo's option is young players only.. so it's not the same squad, just go and check our rooster last season

Yeah it was stupid, but I doubt we've seen the end of these stupid decisions. Trust the management to out-do itself.

You're looking more and more correct after each and every match. Hopefully, he'll have a vision or something in his sleep and figures out what to do to bring the best out of this team.

THE SEARCH FOR SPEED
9/28/2009 12:05:00 AM

Milan must change pace. Coach Leonardo sees the team’s problem as being that of a slow manoeuvre. Milan must come out of this situation, finding back its own identity.

MILAN – After the home draw against Bari, coach Leonardo analyzed the game: “We found it very tough, it was a very difficult game.
We played against a team who put us in difficulty with space and very high rhythm. Our defence succeeded to contain the attacks of Bari, whereas in attack we found it very difficult. There are no changes to do, we shall try to find solutions, we shall do all that is possible to speed up the move.
If the manoeuvre is slow, we find it very difficult to surprise the opponents, this is the real problem of Milan.
Today we have suffered a lot and the tactical setup did not have great importance. We found it difficult to cover the pitch and we spent a lot of energy which made us lose further energy.
However, there was an effort by the team, in the second half we managed to go round our opponents thanks to the grit.
In the second half I sacrificed the forward to contain the opponents. Tonight the risk of losing was high.
We must reason things out calmly and use a different game.
Now on Wednesday we play a completely different game, psychologically we’re in difficult, but our team has the experience to react.
Let’s hope that at the stadium there can be more fans than tonight, the team needs the public’s support.”

Well we're referring to the whole squad, because there are areas that are stronger this year.

For example, last year Carlo had three fit central defenders - Maldini, Kaladze, Bonera. The latter two go injured in Nov/Dec, and he had to make do with Favalli and then Senderos. What kind of options is that? Leo has got Nesta (the best defender in the team), Thiago Silva, Onyewu, Kaladze all available.

In midfield, Carlo lost Gattuso in Oct/Nov for the entire season. Pirlo was injured from September till early December. Leo has both of these players fit at the moment (it can of course change).

Up-front, it was even worse. Borriello was out from October for the whole season. Inzaghi was missing from September till February. He had a period of three, almost four, months where Pato was the only fit striker.

Astafjev's what you're saying about Leo needing to find RIGHt tactic, not forcing a tactic that works makes sense... But you have to admit, if he played some sort of negative small team tactic, where they sat back 85 minutes and tried to catch a counter twice, he'd be booed off by the San Siro fans....

It's not easy to coach a team like milan, you're expected to attack AND win.

I mean I can't imagine it working... if milan sat 10 men behind ball w/ pato playing off last shoulder and just tried to launch a quick long ball counter when teams out of position to utilize pato's speed..... Leo would surely get run out of town for that

I've not mentioned anything about defensive or negative tactics. I'm just saying he needs to change something, because it isn't working very well at the moment. I'm still surprised he hasn't tried 4-2-3-1, with Ronnie on the left, but there you go.

At the moment, all I want to see is the team winning. I'm sure Berlusconi would settle for that at this point too. It's not like we haven't seen defensive football before.

With the older players we can't play fast ball at all; neither a regular tactic sentence, admit it; those players can't run for 30 minutes continually at all; so the only solution is counter attack with is not suitable for Milan but no other solution for those current players.

If LEO want his tactic and technical aspect been executed in the field he most do the Following:-

1- Trust the Younger Players like:- (Antonini, Bonera, Onyewu, Abate, Borriello, Di Gennaro, Strasser, Hunt, Flamini and Zigoni) whenever the players are covered from injuries.

2- Find a Balance selection of players between New and Experienced players and design more than formation so the team can have the variety in playing as much as he can.

3- Create tactical and technical aspects that suit the capability of the players and plan for tricks and tips to surprise the opponents.

I would suggest the following formation for the Next game in CL against Zurich:-

-Anto ---- Nesta ---- Silva ---- Zambrotta- /Onyewu

-- Abate ---- Pirlo ---- Flamini ---- Janku -- /Di Gennaro "if he is ready" /Strasser
------------ Borriello -- Hunt -------------- /Zigoni /Pippo

I see the light in this one IMO.

Some of those young players you list aren't good enough. Antonini, Di Gennaro, Onyewu (who isn't a left-back).

For others it is debatable whether they are good enough or not - Strasser, Zigoni (he isn't ready yet), Abate.

I know Onyewu is not LB and He is CB, but let us use him in SA when we need him not choose Khaldz and Oddo !!!

yes, but at least they can do business in the field, over that all they are young and they will prove them selves in the field'

I don't want See Turtles in the field however they are skilled and Experienced.

Leo can't do much with the current roster. In fact I don't think that any other coach could do better. Hunter is a quality player but he needs quality crosses in order to score goals. That means that we need high quality full backs. We struggled with full backs ever since Sergi and Cafu stopped playing. Quality full backs = more quality crosses = more goal scoring opportunities. Abate could develop into a decent FB, but we need someone on the left side.

Galliani denies that Leonardo run risk in Milan
Posted on 28/9/2009 at 17:38 by Team Trivela.com
The poor performance of Milan early in the season do not put the coach Leonardo at risk. At least that's what says the vice-president Adriano Galliani, who ruled out resignation of Brazil, chosen at the end of last season to replace coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"Absolutely not," Galliani said at an event on Monday. "I felt the same things after the final of the Champions League with Ancelotti in Istanbul (in 2005 against Liverpool) and then won it again. I have my vision of football, why, when you win, win the club, the coach and players, and when you lose, lose all together. "

Milan added 8 points in the first six rounds of Italian football, occupying only the 11th position in the table. They have scored just three goals so far, and only one in the last five games. The last game was a draw at home to Bari by 0 to 0, when the goalkeeper Marco Storari avoided defeat rossonera.

"It was a point gained rather than two points lost," admitted the manager. "We played badly, and the boos of the fans are normal. I ask that the fans are close to the team, because with the boos do not gain anything. But I understand the protests as understandable, and I have nothing to complain about. Although a draw in house is not the most, although it was good because the Bari played better than us and our keeper was great. "

According given up by the Italian press, Milan have not started so badly since the 1981/82 season when he had demoted. At the time, were four defeats, one draw and one victory in the first six games.

After putting up with Carlo's subpar coaching over the past two seasons, we're suddenly going to dump Leo after six months of league play?

I don't think so. That would be so incredibly stupid.

BETWEEN HIGHS AND LOWS
9/29/2009 3:33:00 PM

Ahead of the match against Zurich, Leonardo and Massimo Ambrosini gave a press conference. The themes: the solutions to the problems, the playing system, Milan's moment. - THE DECLARATIONS -

MILANELLO - Here are the first declarations made by coach Leonardo and Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini ahead of the match against Zurich, during this afternoon's press conference at Milanello:

LEONARDO:
On the moment: "We've had a season of highs and lows, against Zurich it will be an important match. Now there's the Champions League, it's an important match and we have to put in practice what we discuss. In the Champions League there's not need for much change, we need what our basic formation is."

On the solutions to the problems: "It's true that playing successive games isn't easy, we are 48 hours away from a game and 24 hours before another. We have to find solutions to face the next match without lingering in the past. Now there's the Champions League, it's an important match and we have to put in practice what we discuss.
I'm not worried, a coach is always under discussion, it's impossible for there not to be discussion. For me it's the least important thing.
The team's issue is general, it isn't physical, it's not true that we didn't run against Bari. We are a team built to play and to hurt, when we struggle to create attacking chances we suffer, we are looking for some alternatives for the system.
Our moves have to be faster, we have to get the ball further forward, if we manage to play in the opposition's half we create more. Against Bari that was the idea, but after ten minutes Bari found space and their playing style caused us problems."

On the playing system: "Certainties come from results, after Siena and Marseille we had many certainties. You can't just think about revolutionising things all the time. It's not a question of changing the playing style, because the players we have in the squad are suited to the 4-3-1-2, then during the match it's possible to look for alternatives. Alternatives are necessary, especially when things aren't going well. We are thinking about it, we're thinking about everything."

MASSIMO AMBROSINI
On the old guard: "Complaints are always caused by results, it's normal that when things don't go well, they are about the age of the players and the amount of time they've been here, but this for us is a motivation, we don't feel old, we don't feel arrived, we already showed it a few times this season. They said the same things about Juve a few years ago, and now they are doing very well. Ten years ago, important players of ours were severely criticised but then won everything."
