discussed in other threads but for what it's worth:

Mum threatened divorce as AC Milan made bumper offer to Barcelona ace Xavi

damn women

for what it's worth im trying to remember lineup used in 99-00. That was sheva's first year but largely disappointing.
If Xavi arrived in Milan in 1999, I don't think he will last long. We had Albertini and Giunti in Pirlo-esque position. We had Boban and Leonardo in trequartista position. Where would he fit? He would end up loaned out to other clubs before Milan shipped him out somewhere only to have him blossom. He would join the list that contained Vieira, Davids, Kluivert and more recently Gourcuff.

Looking at the trophies that he won today, we can only wonder. But then again, we will never know, won't we? Besides, name me a Spanish player who can really cut it in Serie A? Not saying that they're no good but different types of play is the cause. In the last 10 years we had Ivan dela Pena (correct pronunciation?) and Gaizka Mendieta (IMO very similar to Xavi or Iniesta in style of play) while Milan also contributed to the Spanish contingent with Javi Moreno and Jose Mari. Not one made it.

1999 was Zaccheroni. Wasn't there a colossal fight between him and Albertini over him not playing Albertini?

That summer we mostly changed wide players. Donadoni, Guly and Ziege did leave and Serginho and Gattuso (who came here as wing back) arrived.

We bought Diego de Ascentis for central midifield though. Maybe he was the plan B when Xavi refused to move? :D

BTW we also bought José Mari (18 M wasted) and Chamot from Atlético Madrid at the time. Milan really was fishing in Spain...

wagner.. is december 1995.. that one with juninho chucky on the cover. :)

Thanks

Found the same stuff in a edition from the days - May 5, 1986 (Palmeiras on the cover). Cerezo had already signed a contract with Milan and he was healing a tigh injury. If surgery was needed his contract would not be registered.

I also remember some article when quoted G as saying something to the effect of "we missed Figo but don't worry we signed Ba"

Unrelated, but we really let go of lot of players in the 90's who went on to become big guns elsewhere.. like Elber, Vieira, Davids, Kluivert...

(and my mom giving me a NT shirt for the World Cup.. i was so dissapointed when she gave me the shirt)

First magazine i bought was in 1988.

Vieira, who is probably the best DM that I've seen, 'could' have done a lot for us. On the other hand, Gattuso's career would have never taken off. I know that I'd rather have Rino's career with us than a potentially awesome Vieira.

We tried to sign Kluivert again after his time at Barca. I'm kinda glad that didn't happen - not a fan of his temperament.

No there wasn't. Albertini only had problem with Ancelotti (but that's another topic). Zaccheroni was on his 2nd season in Milan after winning the scudetto and he had the back-ups and approval of the senior players like Maldini, Costacurta, Boban and Albertini. Along with Helveg, Leonardo, Weah and Bierhoff; those players were key to Zaccheroni 3-4-1-2 formation.

In 99/00 with the arrival of Sheva, he tried to use 3-4-3 but not really successful, so he went back to 3-4-1-2, causing Weah to leave Milan for Chelsea.

That summer we mostly changed wide players. Donadoni, Guly and Ziege did leave and Serginho and Gattuso (who came here as wing back) arrived.
Guly was still with Milan that season. He was with Milan until end of season 00/01 before we traded him to Inter with a player who ended up becoming Milan midfield stalwart for nearly a decade, winning 2 CL with Milan and WC 2006 but now already sold to Juventus. Good deal I must say :D

Unrelated, but we really let go of lot of players in the 90's who went on to become big guns elsewhere.. like Elber, Vieira, Davids, Kluivert...
True, that's quite baffling to me. Those players came to Milan between season 95/96 - 97/98 when they were still very green. At that time Milan was still a very good team but 96/97 and 97/98 was a disaster. The way I see it, the board couldn't risk of trusting young players to lead Milan and although some players might show some promise, the board were too impatient. The situation was bad already in Milan and any players, not only the young ones, would certainly suffer.

Dont KNOW what the problem is.. we bought Dugarry instead of the master... in milan's board.. we trust! ;)
Milan seemed to buy young players who scored when playing against Milan. Dugarry was in playing in Bordeaux who beat us in UEFA Cup that season. From that Bordeaux team, Milan bought Dugarry, Bayern eventually got Lizarazu and Juve had Zidane. I'd say we're the loser here.

Don't really know the story about Xavi back than but yeah I think De Ascentis was an alternative for us(not first choice) because during Zaccheroni era I remember that we are also very close in singing Giuliano Giannicheda (Zach's Udinese midfield player).

I remember the Ancelotti issue clearly, which IMO was partly due to Carlo's anger at his playing career's end being hastened by Albertini's arrival

But did some digging about Zac and Albertini and unearthed this -

http://archiviostorico.corriere.it/...tini_contro_Zaccheroni_co_0_00030810069.shtml

This is what I vaguely remembered. Probably not a full-blown fight, but they certainly did not have a good relationship in early 2000.

I love the styles.
Cesare is all trendy in the pic. Cigarette, leather trench coat, a fashion haircut, pointy shoes, turtleneck... He is totally dressed like the young assistant.
While Rocco is all classical. Old school coat and tie, vintage colours (I guess so) an his famous hat. Very sober and elegant - the boss.

What's the guys name who played on the wing and was great in his first season until he had a car crash and was never the same player again(flashy/charasmatic guy)? ITV 4 had a "transfers that shook the world" programme on earlier and he was on it. Capello and Desailly(sp?) said he would have been one of the best players in Europe but the crash knocked it all out of him.
