Although it maybe wouldn`t be a bad idea to try it, I can`t see us ever playing with a 3 man defense.

The last time I remember Milan playing 3 at the back was against Lazio a few years ago under Ancelotti. It helped us win the game but I don't see the need for it now.

No big team in Europe plays with 3 CB anymore because this system is very vulnerable against systems with one striker and 2 wingers, which are very well spread. Napoli is the only good team playing like this but they have a long way to go till being a force in Europe.

But you're right. Problem is that a 3 men's defensive line suffer a lot against 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Wing's defense is the weak link in a 3-5-2. And nowaday some of the best players in the world are playing wide.

Urby could also play in robinhos spot. this to me seems like a good solution for the current crisis milan is in. Silva and Flamini would do a good job as a DM's. Pato and Ibra can of course change between one another. Actually... considering Cassano isn't even fit to run back and defend I'd play Robinho on the left wing and urby on the right

I believe in the modern game the best formation is the one that inter played last season. they won the treble and had the same team in every competition. They won serie a and beat small teams and big ones with the same formation, the same goes for the coppa italia. but the cl was were the formation really progressed. They played smaller teams like cska Moscow beating them comfortably and having more possession of the ball but when they played against teams like Barca were its hard to keep possession they switched the style but kept the formation the same. On paper it seemed as if they were playing a 4-2-1-3 but in fact they were playing a hybrid of a 4-5-1 when defending and a 4-2-1-3 when attacking. This though could only work because of the work ethic the whole team had and they worked as a team defending and attacking together. A dyslexic child (sorry if I upset anyone) would pick balotelli over pandev but mourinho chose pandev cos he works harder than balotelli (along with other factors). pandev and eto could have been seen in full back positions when defending but balotelli would never do that.
I wish Milan could play this formation but the truth is we can’t. Every team needs to have a formation built around its best players and to be honest our best players can’t play that formation especially our attackers except pato and robinho. We haven’t got 2 DM like cambiasso and motta and the wide players can’t track back like eto and pandev. We no longer have a number 10 with the same ability as Sneijder (unless we get ganso or another player). Our defence other than fullbacks is better than theirs but that’s about it. I have hope though as only a few additions can improve the squad dramatically.
By the way I think Abate is well underrated by people.

yes something like that. but i think we need to be more realistic and use players we have cos milan are no real madrid they wont buy a whole squad in a transfer window. i would switch pato and balotelli. and the DM need to be strasser and ambrosini(hes our captain and plays holding mid really well). the defence is good but ill keep nesta until we find an adequate replacement

• My preference is a line-up with four midfielders. (The easier games not necessary though.)
• The holding role suits Van Bommel better than Pirlo. This way both are in their best positions.
• Zambrotta is returning, but Pirlo is still injured. As long as Pirlo's still out, Merkel should replace him.
• Gattuso is preforming very well. (Versus the weaker opponents I'd like to see Strasser instead of him.)
• Robinho's very good preformances were very important, because of his movement and so (he contributes a lot). Hopefully playing Boateng (<3 the Prince-Pirlo combo) makes him not necessary so that we can play with four midfielders and Pato. Leaving out Robinho is very hard though.
