And then there were seven: Milan’s striker conundrum
Posted on Thursday, 7th July 2011 by Sam Lewis
It’s the problem that on paper every manager would love to have, but in practice, the fact that AC Milan have seven forwards(count ‘em) for two positions on the pitch could create some issues, that frankly, Masimilliano Allegri doesn’t really need.

The Rossoneri forward line has changed dramatically in the last 12 months. A roster that this time last year contained Ronaldinho, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Marco Borriello, was swept aside in favor of revolution that Allegri proved at Milanello. With the help of the money that Silvio Berlusconi has not pushed down the waistband of one of his “friends” and Galliani’s houndog like nose for a bargain, Allegri was able to challenge for the title last season with the likes of Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in addition to Alexandre Pato, Pippo Inzaghi and the aforementioned Ronaldinho.

The “Fab Four” plus Inzaghi provided more than a few headaches for Allegri in the first half of the season, many wondering if the new man would try and fit them all in one line up,reminiscent of Brazil 2006, but the former Cagliari man decided to go for balance rather than a potentially suicidal offensive formation, and effectively ending Ronaldinho’s time at Milan, the former Barcelona playmaker simply not hard working enough to fit into Allegri’s plans, and when January came – ‘Dinho was out the door.

This is the best formation for me,with this one we'll be no.1 in the world again!

It reminds me on that 2003-2007 era.

Well our actual starting 11 would be :

Ibra-Pato
Robinho(EL92)

Boateng(seedorf)-MVB-Gattuso(flams)

Taiwo-TS-Nesta(Mexes)-Abate

Abbiati

This formation is actually pretty solid (and improved form last year) . We would only need 1 mid to complete it .

I think we should play 4-2-3-1 with:

Abate - Nesta - Silva - Taiwo
Ambrosini - Van Bommel
Prince
Pato - Ibra - Robinho

Would like to see us get Aquilani as a ball playing CM who can defend as well. He can also play MVB and Ambro's position. Right now in the squad Boateng is the only true box to box player we have so I think we need to get another player to compete with him. That player would be Hamsik ideally. For creative roles in midfield to compete with Seedorf obviously Cesc would be ideal. But seeing as it is almost impossible to get him then I like the idea floating around the forum of bringing in Diego on the cheap. He can either play in the midfield 3 or as a trequartista. We already added a driving midfield runner to the team in El-Sharaawi so solving the creativity issue needs to be next. Then Aquilani on the cheap is too good to resist.

wonder if Allegri will sacrify one soldier (Gatt, ambro) in the mid and turn to a "ball-playing" midfield...

I actually want us to switch system to 4-4-2.
Imagine this team:

Abbiati
Abate-Mexes-Silva-Taiwo
Boateng-Mvb-Seedorf-Schweinsteiger
Pato-Ibra

- Abate --- Nesta -- Silva --- Taiwo -
--- Prince --- Ambrosini --- Monty ---
--------------- Ganso ---------------
------------ Ibra --- Pato -----------

Montolivo will join within a week. Ganso will sign in January. I can't see much other activity occuring other than a replacement for Antonio Cassano in the January transfer window.

Respect for our CAPITANO but :star:MVB:star: is the king on that position.

If you look at the Pirlo-Gattuso-Seedorf-Kaka diamond which brought us so much success, a Montolivo-????-Boateng-Ganso diamond could do something very similar. Boateng and Seedorf, Ganso and Kaka, Montolivo and Pirlo, all have similar attributes and can most certainly be the type of players who can replace those very players. Are they as good? Time will only tell.

Although Ambrosini and Van Bommel have excellent qualities, I still think that position is one where we have room for improvement. Marchisio would be the man I would have my eye on if I was Allegri/Galliani but I think for the time being we will certainly have to settle on the two men in question, as well as the man who filled that void, Gattuso. It's nice to see so many options available to us right now though.

Everybody is saying how great Ganso is, but I'm just not sold till I see it. Maybe that's just the pessimist in me

433 still a good option imo, we can forget about this mezza alla role if taiwo improving our left side, why do we bother looking for mezza alla, we can just put monty as centrally LMF , put nasri as RAMF(right attacking Midlfielder) to improve right side, or Cesc as RCAM (right central attacking Midlfielder), like:

I love it how you got Robinho as most forward player, and Pato as 3rd most forward. That was sarcasm by the way.

i presume our opponent use 3 forward; and Thiago, Nesta/Mexes, abate, MVB capable to stop any those 3 forward, imo 4 defensive players is enough to make it balance.

are you expecting ibra as most forward player/striker & reduce his 'role' as ball winner, wow goodluck with that.
note:i put Pato as spearhead/poacher in that formation.

That's a weird position for a poacher then. And what's with Robinho's arrow? Is he going to run out of the field?

Our defence is in need of cutting. We have four defenders and as a back up we have 4 defenders which if you think are team dosen't need any more. But as a back up to are back up 4 and extra 2 defenders.

Starter:----Back up:----Back up to Back up:

CM Thiago --- Yepes

CM Nesta --- Mexes --- Bonera

LB Tawio --- Antonlini ---

RB Abate --- Zambro --- Oddo
