Fiorentina: 'It was for the fans'
Fiorentina patron Andrea Della Valle explains it was for the safety of the fans that tonight's game with Milan was called off.
The pitch could've been cleared of snow, but the worst problems were in the stands with thick shards of ice and sub-zero temperatures.
“We evaluated the almost total impossibility of using the stands at the Stadio Artemio Franchi,” explained Della Valle.
“We could not put the well-being of our fans at risk and unfortunately a portion of the stadium is still under ice.
“There was the option to play behind closed doors or with only some of the seats open to the public, but that would not have been right.
“Another alternative was to play tomorrow, but the weather predictions are for sub-zero temperatures and if anything on Sunday the conditions would've been worse.”
Although there is no official date for the rescheduled game yet, the most likely is January 27.
“Considering the Coppa Italia ties in January, it should be the penultimate or final Wednesday in January and so probably the 27th,” added Fiorentina general manager Sandro Mencucci.
“The authorities were right, as objectively when we looked at the stands they simply were not safe and so the wisest decision for the fans was to postpone.
“We want our stadiums to be full and with people on their feet with excitement, so playing the game behind closed doors would've been madness.
“We could've left it open for an inspection tomorrow, but the weather reports suggest it'll be -6 overnight and -3 during the day, so the situation was likely to be the same, if not worse. It would've been cruel to give our fans that slender hope when it was always unlikely to go ahead.”
