Fell asleep yesterday while watching Milan - Juve 2003 final at the theater of dreams. Now I know why I'm getting less and less passionate about football as time goes on. Football was so much better back then.

It ended 0-0 and there weren't that many chances, but my god it was more exciting than 90% of the 'sexy' games we get now. There was high tempo and the game seemed so much faster than now. Also, both teams were a lot more mobile, especially Milan. Gattuso was everywhere (on the right, then sometimes went left, at times stayed as anchor), Rui dropped deep in midfield at times and at other times just stayed wide right, Pippo and Sheva kept swapping places, even Pirlo (he really did deteriorate, seemed much faster then, more athletic, and a lot more mobile, you know a normal footballer not the specialized anchor version we get now) wasn't playing in his comfort zone but went forward and swapped places with Seedorf. My point is, it wasn't the crap we get to see nowadays with players fixed into their spots, low tempo games that bore us to death. It was high tempo but not a scoring fest either ala low IQ defenses in the PL.

And there were so much balls on the pitch, real men were playing. Maldini, Nesta, Rui Costa, Pippo, Costacurta, Rino, Sheva. And from Juve that mean defense of Ferrara, Montero, Thuram, Zambrotta who was awesome :proud:, Davids, Tacchenardi, Conte (hair loss was obvious ).

Damn I miss such football. Also the little details like Lippi lighting up a cigar on the touchline, Davids' glasses , the Nike Air Zoom Total 90 II which is the greatest football boot ever, Milan's shirt and font, the classic Champions League TV theme, basically everything. Was a great nostalgic 96 mins till I lost the battle vs my body and fell asleep.

Now blame it all on 'plastic balls' and you'd have completed your transition into Carlo Garganese

Seriously though, agreed partly. Not fully because nostalgia can blind one to several faults at times. I personally thought the '03 final was fabulous because we raised our game against what was, to me, the best team in the world then. Yes, there was a debate between Madrid and Juve, but Juve were defensively masterful. And we really weren't the favourites going into the match. But that's really when the 'CL DNA' told.

Nedved being suspended made us the favorites IIRC.

But didn't we also win the league match between us some month earlier, which Nedved appeared on?

I also saw that match, I had work the next day and it went on until 4 AM but the game was so tense I couldnt shut my eyes for a second and I even felt nervous during the PK shootout eventhough I watched it a million times.

MoM that match was Gattuso, he was unbelievable!!! every single blade of grass he stepped on maybe 100 times, he was cutting off balls like a maniac and he had pretty good ball control and distribution, he didnt make one mistake that night, and the best thing was when we were basically playing 10 men at ET, and Juve had a corner and half their team forward, Rino chased down the cleared header so that the ball ended back to Buffon, and this is at the death, what lungs!!!

I must also compliment Roque Jr. for that game, after rewatching the match, I completely changed my perception of him, I used to think he is a useless player, who should be smoking weed on the Rio beach, but the guy did good while he was healthy and really put in a great effort to stay on for nearly 40 mins of action with a horrible groin injury, he could hardly walk but he handled the pain like a real man.

This game, and the Portugal-England match from euro2004 I watched later :D was a great reminder of how great of a player Rui Costa was, I think Rui Costa is the type of player you would only see once in your lifetime (like Zidane, Pirlo, Cruyff) Ive never seen so much finesse, the guy glided across the field as if he was on ice skates, his passes were so smooth and nicely weighted, and his look is one of the coolest ive ever seen with his low socks and bohemian hairstyle and necklace  I love the guy, he was magnificent in that final.

As for the final itself, Milan were simply superior to Juve, I dont know if that would change if Nedved was there, but just in terms of playing style, Milan were the much better team, better passing and movement, much more flair, more desire to win, all the real chances were for Milan, Juve had a very robust team, very hard with their tackles, very direct, they looked a bit German, it was a tough team but they never stood a chance because Milan had too many brains in the team, I just wonder what would have happened if that Sheva goal was not disallowed, it would have been an even better spectacle.

This is surely one of the most underrated finals ive seen, because of the quality of the football on display, and because two very powerful and different schools of football with such a great rivalry clashed with each other. I am so glad I got to watch the match live, still the greatest day of my life :star:

I really hate the fact that mainstream media branded the 03 Final as boring. They usually showed the footage of that girl sleeping in the stand when the game was heading towards the PK shoot out.

Both Milan and Juve knew each other too well and they knew what will happen if they give just the tiniest amount of space to the other so they shut down and simply cancel each other out. What hapenned then can be described as a chess match between two tacticians : Lippi vs Ancelotti and how the players translate the instruction. Milan and Juve stuck with their guns and played their own respective games while still trying to snuff out any chances. It can be easily seen as defensive display by both but surely a masterclass in how to defend with players like Maldini, Nesta, Thuram and Zambrotta still in their best

It certainly wasn't a neutral's fave game but certainly a tacticians' fave one day after the final, a leading UK newspaper (forgot which one) declared "Football was born in England but it was played in Italy".

Yeah. I loved the 'fencing analogy' in guardian piece I've linked here several times. I think that was more appropriate than going for the tactic-card once again. But I guess I can also understand how people can unappreciate this game. I mean, look how many penalties were converted. Some German newspaper said if Italian play the final between themselves they should just shoot penalties ... with a cloth on their eyes.

I came back home after going to Old Trafford to watch the match, everyone said it was great that I got to go but a shame that it wasnt very exciting. I only forgave them because they were 13 years old and they didnt know any better :o

You Corzioli, aren't you a biologist of some sort? Kindly invent an immensely expensive life-extension serum and give it only to Galliani and Berlusconi. I want 100 trophies under this regime.

Absolutely crazy that this actually happened.

A team of: Dida; Cafu, Maldini, Nesta, Kaladze; Rino, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kaka; Sheva, Pippo is incredible... sure, they all peaked and troughed at different times... but by god.. that team is just.

I was glad when he was sacked.......he didn't want Boban to continue playing for Milan????

boban wasnt playing much with zac and maldini already.. dont remember if terim had some problems with him.

but terim had in attack rui costa, inzaghi and sheva...
and the guy goes to turim to play with 8 defenders.. imagine berlusconi watching that.

Zac didn't liked Boban, but he was forced to play Zvone last 8 to 10 games and that's why we won that title. Terim on the other hand said Boban is not in his strategy game plan, so Galliani loaned him to Celta Vigo....and Boban was lost forever.
But nevermaind coz Boban was voted the best Milan's foregn player of last 50 years and is still in the hearts of all Milan fans, specialy Curva Sud.
