Seedorf: Derby Is A Must-Win

AC Milan's veteran Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf believes his team need to beat city rivals Inter on Sunday to prove their disastrous start to the season was just a blip.
While three-in-a-row champions Inter have already resumed their customary position at the head of Serie A, Milan have had to claw their way back from the relegation zone, having lost their opening two matches. But victories over Lazio and Reggina mean that Milan head into the crucial derby just four points off the pace.

Even so, Seedorf believes a win is that much more important for his team, the nominal home side at San Siro on this occasion, than it is for Jose Mourinho's Inter. "The derby is a hugely important match, even if in this moment it won't make a big difference to the rest of the season," said the Dutchman.

"Managing to beat Inter would be important for our fans after a disappointing beginning to the season. Earning three points would be important for Milan to rebound. If Inter were to win, then you could start to say that they're putting distance between themselves and the chasers.

"I expect it to be a great derby, both teams are playing well and the morale is high in both camps."

Morale is certainly higher in the blue and black half of the city, where Inter have adapted quickly to new coach Jose Mourinho's style and tactics. They are even showing Mourinho character, with the Portuguese coach playing his usual cards in midweek against a stubborn Lecce side, throwing on a posse of attacking players in the second half to try to break the deadlock.

Seedorf has been at his creative best this season, and his form is one reason that Ronaldinho has found himself warming the bench in the last three Milan matches. He may have arrived amongst much pomp and ceremony, as did Ukraine forward Andrei Shevchenko, but both have been playing second fiddle to lesser lights.

Esteem
But Seedorf insists there is harmony in the camp and that players are not in competition with each other for a starting berth. "First and foremost we play together. Between us there is only esteem and respect," he said of his relationship with the Brazilian.

"There's no duel because I have different characteristics to him. In the last two matches I've played in central midfield, whereas he plays in a different position."

Seedorf is also looking forward to locking horns with Mourinho, for whom he has the utmost respect despite the former Chelsea boss's reputation as a provocateur. "I've been able to get to know him and I think he's a really intelligent coach," he added. "He's a coach who really protects his players. I think the provocations are a strategy to take the attention (pressure) away from the team."

While Seedorf will undoubtedly have an important role to play for Milan, so too will Inter captain Javier Zanetti. The Argentine has been accepting the plaudits this week after reaching 600 first team outings for Inter in his 14 years at the club.

He is not taking Milan lightly, though, despite their early-season problems. "You have to respect Milan, they've improved and it will be a really competitive match as the derby always is," he said.

"I think Inter are coming into this game ready, because we've had the time to prepare as best as we can and we hope that we can do what we're capable of doing to win."

Seedorf talks too much. I always saw him as a very intelligent man, but sometimes in football that isn't a good thing.

I never thought any Milan player could outtalk Kalac, but I guess I'm wrong. Clarence is Milan's official mouthpiece off the pitch when he's not being belligerent on it.

Seedorf was MOTM for me....attacked the hell out of Inter...made Vieria look small...then made the rest of the Inter defense look smaller (except Maicon)....defended and pulled the strings in midfield just like Pirlo used to....doesn't quite have the range Prilo did but then again Pirlo doesn't have Seedorf's dribbling skills either.....to have Pirlo and him fight for that spot and R80 tossed in the mix is a headache that I'd like Ancelotti to have

Just like i predicted, he did good against inter. If it was up to me i'd only play him against top5 teams and in UEFA. And let him rest and prepare in meantime...

Undeniable, even by Wild, solid and aggressive performance by Clarence, transformed into Pirlo for one night like i said before the derby.
Seedorf is showing everybody just how complete he is. An all round midfielder, creative with tactical intelligence, long range shooting, through ball specialist, great FKs, good defensevely too. What more can you ask?
Yes maybe he's not as consistent as we'd like and yes he gives the ball away cheaply at times, but this season he's going to get more rest providing Ancelotti will keep rotating the team and we'll see Seedorf at the top of his game.

Best game I've seen from Seedorf in a looooong time. He was absolutely dominating in midfield, didn't make a single mistake during the entire match I think, he needs to continue like this.

His first half was rather average. His first touch of the ball resulted in an overhit pass and a throw in for inter. Probaly 5 or more of the passes that followed were either intercepted or went straight to the opposition.

He was a beast in the second half. So as per Wild's calculations, he should have about 3 more good games left for the season :D

Actually,he did make a few bad passes at the beggining, but besides that,he was a beast. He had some good passes later and he also made attacking runs, but what impressed me the most was his defending. He ran a lot and every time he was in duel with viera or someone else he won it. A great performance from him..:star:

I give Seedorf the rating he deserves.
When he is shit I say it (Guess u know that)
When he is great I say it : I always said he is better than Pirlo + deserve more cheering when 99% of ppl in here r blind of that fact.
And I was the first if not the only 1 who said that he doesnt deserve all the booing prior 2 his great performance during the winter when we won the CL + I declared he was better than Kaka when no1 here dared 2 say it coz the Kaka idea is just bigger than em.

Great game for Clarence indeed. He even got a MOM at Rai or some program. However I didn't see Pilro in him. As he started it was evident that 30 metre passes in front of the defense is not his cup of tea. However he got into the game and won back every ball he had lost in the horrendeos starting minutes. Unbelievable was to see him defending and taking one for the team. His tempo dictating got better and better also.

Like you care?
I'm not sure if I'm going off topic on this but..

Seedorf seems to fit in Pirlo's place quite right. He hasn't had stellar games(in other words he still does have a rocky patch during a game here and then) but he's been performing still pretty good from time to time.

Might give Pirlo a bump to step up his game a bit if this continues.

 ... moving on...

would you start Seedorf vs Zurich or would you rest him for the Cagliari game? Im not sure who needs the rest more, him or Ambro, I prefer to see Seedorf start and give ambro a rest and lets see how Seedorf and R80 pair up with hopefully Kaka given a rest.

One of the major - if not the most - contributing factors in our change of fortunes is Clarence adapting well into Pirlo's role in central midfield. Just goes to show how mature he is as a professional footballer, with bags of experience and intellegence to complement his silky smooth skills. Even when not at his best, whenever a ball comes to his feet, its dead ... his touch and control is astonishing.

Bravo Clarence ... keep up the good work! :star:
